ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- He may be a first termer but he can throw a solid punch it has turned out, as Second District Representative and National Democratic Party (NDP) Backbencher Hon Melvin M. Turnbull stood up to his boss, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith (AL), in the House of Assembly (HoA) moments ago, December 13, 2017, virtually telling him he was unfit to be the Minister of Finance.

It was a sentiment expressed privately by Members of the NDP, including party spokeswoman Ms Eileene L. Parsons OBE, a story first and accurately reported by this news site, but it was the first time that an elected member of the ruling party had publicly made that declaration.

In his half and hour address under Private Business during the Eleventh Sitting of the Second Session of the Third HoA, Hon Turnbull continued to maintain earlier statements that, contrary to what Premier Smith had stated, the Territory is not open for business and also hit back at Premier Smith for making a public statement that he, Hon Turnbull, had not told the truth when he told a local media house that Cane Garden Bay had not received help from Government in the restoration efforts following hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Concerns were raised in private

Hon Turnbull also raised concerns that it was soon after criticising his boss that Government had conveniently found that Cane Garden Bay beach was not safe and had issues of sewage runoff, noting that these were some of the issues that existed in his District long before the hurricanes.

He also stated that he has on many occasions raised his concerns privately to no avail. This revelation also comes on the heels of criticisms that Hon Turnbull should have raised his dissatisfaction with the leadership instead of going public.

The coup de gras; however, came when Hon Turnbull declared that there needs to be shift in the way things are done in Government.

Give Hon Skelton Ministry of Finance

The Second District Representative then turned to Premier Smith and dropped the bombshell, stating that he firmly believed Minister for Health and Social Development and former Finance Minister (2003-2007), Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton (AL), should be handed back the portfolio of Minister of Finance.

“I am saying this here publicly in this Honourable House and the people of the Territory, I am saying to my Honourable Premier, as we have all agreed, for this time of uncertainty for this time in this Territory where we need to chart the way forward to lead the Ministry of Finance, and I am saying this publicly to my Honourable Premier, that person, Madam Speaker, should be Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton.”

It remains to be seen what will be the counter of Premier Smith, who had demanded the resignation of Bishop John I. Cline for publicly supporting the previous call for him to be replaced as Minister of Finance.

The Session is continuing at Ritter House in Wickham’s Cay II, on the main island of Tortola.

Dr. Smith is under tremendous pressure from the NDP inner circle and the Central Administration bureaucrats for him to give up the Ministry of Finance. But the shadow premier insists not over her dead body will he do such a thing. Skull and Bones fraternity in charge. To hell with who is best for the job.

As far as I can see Mitch has a mind of his own and can pick sense out of nonsense and lies. Claude and John don't have a thing to do with it. And for your information we have been cleaning up the second district. the government on the other hand has not assisted. that my friend is where Mitch is having a problem when the premier put in his statement that the government sent machines to help clean. for the record it is Melvin Hodge and Kirby along with Mitch and other residents of the second districts that have been cleaning CGB and everyone in the other parts of the second district. so don't talk what you don't know. they rather close the beach and pump millions into Bradywine pond rather than enhance. it

But Premier is a gentle and gentile courageous and intelligent level headed leader thank goodness for that.

Since doing things in private has been bringing no results, you had to bring it out in the open and I am sure you did not want it to come to that. Now, you all need to make up your mind though. Time for a new year resolution. Work with Hon Fahie for round two of the no confidence vote. I am sure there is enough people on board to pass the vote. No one needs Fraser to second the motion , besides he may conveniently have to leave again. Let's go.

NDP is doing a lot of Good. Look at all the duty free item that we can Important. I and I'm sure a lot others were able to order our Cars duty free and all of our electronics duty free..I will agree that DDM and the Labour Minister didn't step up...Let us not forget in 2007 when NDP lost the Election the two issues that we had against them were 1/ Selling beef Island lands to investors to develop hotels. Looking back I now see the move was a good one for these reasons Jobs. Jobs and Jobs is always Priority, in country's progress and people's development, also, when an Investor/s going spend that much money its on them to market their business to attrack customers but I was in the Minority.. 2/ The Next Issue was Ronnie been the Finance Minister majority of the people were upset with the Premier not having Finance under his control. That Premier was Doc Smith. Follow me.. in 2011 NDP won the election Ronnie was the Finance Minister...and most people were not happy with that.. During their campaigning they admitted to the people that giving Ronnie finance ministry was a mistake. and promised the people that the Premier if they win would control finance and the people like that,, Follow me.. The Main reasons why VIP lost are for these reasons..1/ The Sea Cows Bay project.. The Purcell ghut Project, The Greenland field Project. The Hospital project, The Green house project. these projects the people thought were over budgeted and in some cases unnecessary spending..Also the in house fighting between Ralph and Frazer over traffic lights and the Tying of drivers Licence to work permits.. All have Sins, Seems like the only way to get to the top of the lander where power and Money is we have to first pull down those who are there. One thing I've learnt when we give people public credit due to them, they will take our public criticism as Genuine..
      • Heaven knows (15/12/2017, 01:26) Like (1) Dislike (0) Reply
At your number 1, which is worst, having an investor spend their own funds to develop land or having the government give away 7.2 mil of people tax money with nothing in return then having to spend more tax money to get the original tax money back? All that is needed is a little business acumen. With the right internal policies, we can welcome investors and not worry about people's rights. There can be clauses in agreement that a portion of resources (including human resources) must be procured locally. Perhaps there could be an option for locals to become shareholders at preferential rates and with preferential rights. So many options! The investor would probably be fixing beef island beach all now so, one less expense for the government.

        2) If you claim people were upset with Ronnie as finance minister (I gather u mean the first lady?) then they seem more upset now with the Premier, wouldn't you agree? So much so that they think Ronnie should take it back. Now if THAT isn't an insult to the premier's performance, then I don't know what is.

As for your reasons why VIP lost, i cannot attest to that but what i DO know is that nobody looking at VIP and NDP right now. Everyone looking at individuals who will stand up for the rights and best interests of the people in this country. For example, you mention Fraser and traffic lights. That was a Fraser thing. So let that speak to Fraser as an individual only ?

There are ways to be diplomatic while maintaining humility and outright respect. This is politics. The entire Territory is in trouble and not just D2. Who lie from who lie will only move on to another subject by next week. The people are hurting, they are homeless, many are out of work. Schools need to be repairs territory wide. We don't have a high school facility. Many hotels were knocked out. The world is investing in us and sending aid. The eyes of the world are on us. We don't need no petty crap right now.

Mitch I would say that this is not the time to show you're a big boy. Many politicians have come and many, including you, will eventually exit the stage. Take it easy and learn that there's more than 1 way to skin a cat. I don't live in your district but mine is a mess too. What government did not do, out neighborhood got up and tried to help ourselves. By time PDW came to help us we were just about done.

Youall have what looks like a family church. It's just about empty because not everybody agree with your daddy and assistant. Sooo what to members and deacons do? Get up in the middle of church and embarrass your father? No. That is not right. Even if we talk and don't get heard, we either wait for the higher calling or just go somewhere else. Not outright tell you, your father and brother that you not running the church right? Son you got alot to learn .
