UPDATE: VI’s Doughmaker tames St Moose!
St Moose of course had won the first leg of the VI Triple Crown and there was much anticipation built up in the large crowd as the two horses took to the starting gate.
St Moose led first time around but down the back straight, around the final curve and bursting for home, Doughmaker had the faster finish to win by a length with Swagg Daddy third.
The exciting win sent the VI fans in a frenzy, although nothing like when Really Uptown won the inaugural VI Triple Crown against top horses from St Thomas and St Croix.
Efforts by this news site to reach Violet 'Letty' Hodge of L&B Stables for a comment on Doughmaker's victory were futile up to post time.
Meanwhile, Race one was won by D'Pretender out of St Croix and ridden by Winston Hurst. Benny Southstreet came second and Weir’s Gap third.
Race two saw Luckytohaveme romp to victory ahead of Bitter Sweet Dream for Tortola and Miss Homer, also from Tortola.
Race three saw Star Ship Titan cross the line first, followed by Jordan’s Image and Kid from Comerio.
The fourth race was also won by a Tortola-based horse, Prince of Speed, with Trust Me second and Funny Accommodation third.
The fifth race of the day was won by Giant Valley, second was Suspicious and third Philly Thunder.
Race six saw victory for Uptown Anthem, ahead of Trading Secret and Break Up the Game. Race seven went to Stephen Got Better from Scripture and Verse and Cupid’s Messenger, whilst race nine was a triumph for Passe Havae ahead of Unguided Missile and Increase My Income.
Unresolved conflicts between the St Croix Horse Owners and the Track Promoters, Traxco, forced the cancellation of the second leg of the VI Triple Crown despite the best efforts of the VI Government to salvage the day.
However, there was nothing stopping horse racing at the Clinton E. Phipps Track and faithful fans could say they got their money’s worth.
