But at the end of the eight-race card, it was the home based horse owners who had the lion share of victories, six, while USVI horse owners had only two, but including the Premier’s Cup through St Moose of St Croix.
Results
Race one, the Tortola Classic, went to Sir Whiskey, who covered the 7 furlongs in a time of 1:34 flat ahead of Gottocha Bob. The horse, owned by Alex Lake and the Family Affairs Stables, won the $5,500 purse with a surge around the final bend.
Race two, the Alvera Maduro-Caines Classic, worth $6,000, was won by VI’s Buy Buy Buy in 1:33.3 ahead of The Starving Artist and Mark It A Wynn. Sparky Bee had set off at tremendous pace, but eventually ran out of steam.
Race three, the BVI Sprint Classic, run over 6 ½ furlongs, saw Call Daddy of the USVI take the win ahead of Apollo Sky and Pumped Up Kicks. The winning time was 1:23.4 and the purse $7,000.
Race four, the Melvin Turnbull Classic, with a purse of $6,000 and run over 1 mile, was hotly contested with Returning Rock, owned by One Time For One Time Stables of Tortola, piping Atorrante at the line in a time of 1:48. 2. Top Class Citizen was third and El Indultado fourth.
Race five, the Axel Ritter Special, contested over 1 mile and worth $7,500, saw Crazy Laura of Top Priority Stables on Tortola romp home in a time of 1:48.4 ahead of Rags to Riches.
Race six, the Myron V. Walwyn Classic, run over 1 1/16th mile for a purse of $10,000, went to Honors, also of Family Affairs Stables of Tortola in a time of 1:50 flat. I’m Sensational came second and Bellamy Chief of Top Priority Stables, third.
Race seven, the feature race, was of course won by St Moose, while the final encounter, the Angel ‘Scaratchie’ Malone Memorial, was won by Daboluck of Thomasville Stables, located on Tortola.
Daboluck covered the 5 furlongs in a new course record of 59 flat. The winning purse was $6,500.
Starship Titan was second and How’s A Wynner third.

St Moose blows the field away to defend Premier's Cup

St Moose of St Croix outclassed the field to defend the Premier's Cup at the August Tuesday Races at Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cows Bay minutes ago, August 2, 2016.
The speedster laid off the pace for a short while and then outkicked the competition to win by six and a half lengths over the 1 and 1/8th Mile distance .
Integrity of St Thomas was second, followed by Tortola horses My Pal Shawn and Governor's Cup winner Giant Valley
The winning time was 1:55.2 while the winning purse was $20, 000.
