ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – It was a night of grace and elegance and one coupled with deep reflection of personal struggles and loss, demonstrating that the Miss BVI pageant is not just about looks and intelligence but about getting a message across regarding important platforms such as domestic violence, suicide and diseases such as cancer.

While the shining moment might have been the crowning of contestant number two Adorya R. Baly as Miss BVI 2015/2016 on August 3, 2015, the pageant which lasted for exactly four hours was as thought-provoking and educational as it was entertaining.

With little technical interference, the pageant moved swiftly along at almost breakneck speed and even more amazing was the fact that many of the contestants had highly technical props and costumes.

The two co-hosts of the evening were Zoe J. Walcott-McMillan and Damion C. Grange who filled the night with their informative comments and sharp sense of humour. They never missed a beat.

Awards

Winning the coveted Miss Congeniality – a vote among the contestant themselves- was contestant number five Helena Hewlett. She also won Miss Popularity, Best Poise and Best Evening Gown.

Miss Photogenic went to contestant number six Dominique A. M. Maloney who also won Best Costume. Best Promotion of the BVI went to contestant number two and eventual winner of the title of Miss BVI 2015/2016 Adorya R. Baly.

She also copped Best Interview, Best Swimwear and Best Talent for her touching portrayal of a slave who suffered abuse and rape at the hands of her white masters in a dramatic piece. The poem was called ‘Rise Up’ and in it she said hundreds of people without insurance was a weapon of mass destruction. “The minimum wage is a weapon of mass destruction,” she said in the dramatic piece.

Contestant number one Ciara M. Christian won the award of Best Intellect.

Third Runner Up was Dominique A. M. Maloney, Second Runner Up was Ashellica Fahie and First Runner Up was Ciara M. Christian.

The final question read thus, “In an interconnected world where information can be spread in seconds, how detrimental can social media and online comments be to brand BVI?”

To this, eventual winner Baly made the point that because of the pressures of social media and online commenting that people experience, they may find themselves changing to suit people and no longer be themselves.

Hewlett responded saying that it would be detrimental to brand BVI as the territory is a small place and online comments with the aid of word of mouth can get a bad message across very rapidly.

Dominique A. M. Maloney said that social media and online comments can be detrimental to the territory because of the impact it could have on one of the main pillars of the economy - Tourism.

Talent segment

While we have already mentioned the impressive performance by Baly of her talent piece, equally impressive and emotive was the performance of Maloney, who had a dramatic poem - props and all - about domestic abuse. She came out enclosed by walls and pinned with labels but by the end of the five minute performance she pushed down all the walls and stomped upon the labels, freeing herself from the shackles of abuse while at the same time transmitting an important message to persons who might be experiencing what she was only portraying through drama.

Michelle Parsons performed a monologue and dance about not giving up in one’s struggles.

Ashellica Fahie had a dramatic and interpretive dance to the words of a spoken word rap “The world is coming to an end.”
Helena Hewlett had a dramatic dance about the devastation of cancer while Ciara M. Christian, who herself lost her father to the dreaded disease cancer, had a spoken word and interpretive dance performance to Whitney Houston’s ‘I Look to You’.

Costume

The costume segment saw an abundance of talent and imagination and every one of the costumes was a winner in its own right. From Ciara M. Christian’s White Cedar Tree to Adorya R. Baly’s US Dollar costume to Michelle Parsons’ St Ursula to Ashellica Fahie’s Fort Burt to Helena Hewlett’s depiction of farmer Moviene Fahie and Jack the Donkey to Dominique A. M. Maloney’s JR O’Neal’s Botanic Garden – they were all well put together and impressive.

During one of the performance breaks of the night, Andy Jeffers performed a touching dance tribute to teenager Chadil Parsons who sadly took his life last year.

Co-host of the show Zoe J. Walcott-McMillan gave some startling statistics as it relates to suicides of persons between the ages of 15 and 25 in the United States and said people oftentimes fail to observe the signs which are right there in their faces.

I was there and very disappointed in her reaction to losing unless it is that we have it all wrong and she needed to leave to use the toilet. Given this was her second try I empathised with her but only up to the point she walked off. At that level, however you feel, a certain degree of self-control is the least we can expect. It was perplexing to see the other girls celebrating with the new queen without her. I would go so as far as to say if she is in fact so disrespectful of the process and her role as queen-in-case, then she is not fit to represent the Territory in the event Ms Baly is unable to carry out her duties.

These contestants needed to be shaken up. #1 to me should've won but based on her performance I understand why shes 1st runner up again. you need to understand the logic in terms of what it takes to win the MS. BVI show here. it is the same formula used each year. #2 obviously got some help however, I still do not see her representing the country with confidence. she almost passed out during the awards segment. #3 needed another year to prepare. she still had some weight to lose. she did not need to rush. #4 needed at least 2 more years to mature. #5 to me was also a strong contender. however she needs to sharpen her analytical skills. she had the poise, body and look to be the winner but from the interview segment on July 30th, I knew that she wasn't going to win. You can also tell based on some of her choices for the segments and to me #6 did not take the competition seriously enough. She also needed to do some research on the show. what it takes to win. she was not in it, to win it, to me.

When entering a pageant you have to be able to accept defeat gracefully. If you can't do so, please don't enter.

Walking off the stage because you lost shows lack of maturity and professionalism.

Personally, if I entered a pageant once or twice and I still didn't secure the title, I would just hang it up. Unless winning is needed to validate your self worth.

I would think we have a criteria to follow. We asked that you sell the BVI. Although #2 was very creative SHE DID NOT sell the BVI. I was not there to support any but right is right, we have time limits to adhere by. Were there any time keepers there?. #2 went over her time for promo and sure did for intro because she was longing than the rest. They were short to the point. It takes courage to go on that stage. Once again, they asked that your cultural costume be in dress form. Did the one who won wore a dress... Some of these contestant are adhering to the guidelines and getting the bitter end of the stick. #1 you should have gotten promo, costume and dress. Swim wear was correct, talent was correct.

If you cant handle the pressures of a show --- then DONT do it ... I didn't pay $30 to come see dramatic breakdowns !!!Cha Man ... There should be a preliminary tryout segment to see if you are qualified to run for this title ... because filling out a form doesn't seem to cut it anymore !!!

Congratulation to the Miss BVI. Congratulation to all the contestants for trying. One thing though we are not told enough about the contestants. It would be nice to know their roots also their long term goals.. A simple name does not say enough.

A standard is set of what to expect from a proposed ambassador each year. The chaperones, sponsors and organizers are held accountable to an extent. Execution on pageant night is left up to the contestant to remain focus and finish strong in every segment. On the side of a judge you look at points, favoritism, better, best, poise, consistency and the likes... as judges too are human so winners and runners bicker to what might be a 2 point win margin. However putting that all aside neither contestants showcased a strong character of intelligence and poise on a local level prior to soaring internationally. Disappointment knocked on the ability to hold a five minute conversation about important structures and investments of the BVI on Thursday night and quaked at one question on pageant night by all contestants. All has failed but I'll say Miss BVI 2015 do your research and memorize your heritage and I would advise that you first must have a love for the BVI and not just what it can offer. I hope your preparations will make you have a change of heart. Blessings

I want to congratulate Ms. Baly for winning the title of Miss BVI 2015. While I agree that she still has a lot of things to improve on, i believe that at that she deserve to win the crown. Her look up until the gown segment was spot on. She looked high fashion and beautiful. I didn't like her styling in th evening gown segment as well as her gown. I think she would look even better with an evening gown that would show her shoulders and back. She also looked stiff on the interview and awarding. She has to loosen up and show the audience that she is able to enjoybthe moment of the pageant. She still has to improve on her cat walk and do away with the hand gestures during the evening gown competition.
Contestant number 1 did an ok job. I was wondering why she looked upset during the awardings when she really didn't come close enough to yhe title as compared with the other ladies. Thanks to the Q and A which I think was her best segment, she could have placed lower. I would have loved her hair to be sleek back.
Contestant 3 needs a lot of work but i love how she carried herself throughout the competition. I agree with her answer regarding the effect of negative comments on tourism but i just hope she was able to expound on it. Among the candidates, she was the only one who was able to identify tourism as on e of the bvi brand.
Contestant 4 has a beautiful face. She also has a good walk. I liked how she carried herself. I hope she joins again. I didn't like her gown. The color choice is poor. I certainly would not consider the color elegant. It was fun and stand out but not elegant.
Contestant 5 is one of my favorites coming in the pageant. She looks very elegant and beautiful. She carries her self with elegance and grace. I also liked her make up and styling. She was spot on look wise. She is deserving of the best in evening gown award and best in poise. I thought her talent was good, she had good extensions and was graceful whem dancing. I thought she was head to head with adorya until the Q and A. I did not like her cultural costume. I think that was her second weakest portion. Her body is amazing. I hope she joins again.
Contestant 6 was beautiful and charming. She deserves the cultural costume award. She also has a strong walk. She could have done better in the talent portion. I know she has the talent, it is just the execution. I love the upper half of her gown, i just didn't like the color of the bottom half, if it was another color, it would have been fabulous. Her styling was also spot on and very simple and modern.

I don't see anything wring with Ms. Jno Lewis' gown. I think she looked even better now than when she won last year. Her make up and gown is perfect and very modern. I think that's what yhe Ms. BVI pageant needs, a modern shake up.

We of the BVI dont promote selling sex to win a pageant here or overseas. That dress was in-appropriate and without class. Might as well she had just come out in her birthday suite. If this is what you all modern shake up, we dont need that here in the BVI.
      • Guest (05/08/2015, 20:29) Like (14) Dislike (0) Reply
Are you serious? Which oart of the gown promoted sex? Or is it just in your malicious mind? The lace details was appropriately placed such that it covered the sensitive parts of the body.. If you think that the gown was selling sex, then why would you allow the swimsuit segment in the pageant? Ther are a lot of pretentious and back ward thinking in here.

Like you said Yall eyes had wanted to adjust to what u wanted to see. We saw something thats not within our culture and our up bringing. Not because the other Caribbean islands does it means we have to do it. Why did she have the sash pointing right down her front and not on the side like it normally hangs? It was obvious she wore no panties. Swim suites still leave something to ones imagination...that thing she wore left NONE!! big difference. I agree with Guest, it was in-appropriate. She would not have won if she was covered up totally anyways for we know those countries do not let the crowns leave their islands.
