ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) Board of Directors will have a new Chairman in Virgin Islander Mr Ron R. Potter come December 1, 2013.

Moments ago, November 19, 2013 the House of Assembly, at its second sitting of the third session of the second House of Assembly, approved his appointment to the Chairman of the Board to replace Allan Parker.

Just as was predicted by this news site in our article of November 14, 2013 Mr Potter enjoyed the support of the entire House of Assembly as both sides showered praises on the incoming Chairman.

Mr Potter declined to comment when contacted by Virgin Islands News Online.

Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool, whose portfolio includes the Corporation, moved the motion in line with section 40 (1) (a) of the British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation Ordinance, Cap 277.

Update: Ron Potter to be confirmed Chairman of BVIEC at next HOA

- Resolution to be presented to the House of Assembly on November 19, 2013 by Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool

Just as was first and accurately reported by Virgin Islands News Online some two weeks ago that Ron Potter was tipped to be the Chairman of the British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) Board, Government has now confirmed our usual factual information.

Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool, whose portfolio includes the Electricity Corporation, will on November 19, 2013 at the Second Sitting of the Third Session of the Second House of Assembly bring a motion to Parliament to approve Mr Potter's appointment to the post effective December 1, 2013.

The National Democratic Party (NDP) Cabinet approved late last month Mr Potter’s appointment in line with section 40 (1) (a) of the British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation Ordinance, Cap 277.

Mr Potter’s appointment as Chairman of the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) Board is expected to receive bipartisan support, which means from both sides of the isle- from NDP and VIP. He will replace businessman Mr Allan Parker who tendered his resignation last month.

Ron Potter tipped as BVIEC Chairman

-Allan Parker no longer Chairman as of end of October 2013

This news site’s many sources within the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) government have confirmed that the Audit Director of BDO, Mr Ron Potter has agreed to replace Allan Parker as Chairman of the British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) Board of Directors.

While the cabinet paper is working its way to Cabinet, two NDP sources confirmed “it’s a done deal”.

Potter background-Accounting guru

Mr Potter has over 20 years of experience as an audit and advisory partner in the offshore financial services industry, including investment funds, fund administrators and trust companies.

An indigenous Virgin Islander, he graduated as a Valedictorian of the then BVI High School and obtained an Honours Degree in Accounting from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill and the professional accounting designation, FCCA.

Mr Potter has also served as Chairman of the National Bank of the Virgin Islands and is currently a Director of the BVI Health Services Authority.

He is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Tortola and currently serves as Assistant District Governor of Rotary International District 7020, for the BVI.

One of Mr Potter’s big tasks will be to oversee the merger of the Water and Sewerage Department and the BVI Electricity Corporation if the plans are still actively being pursued by Communications and Works Minister, Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool.

Once approved by Cabinet, the recommendation to become the new Chairman of the BVIEC must also be approved by the House of Assembly.

Allen Parker calls it quits

Mr Allan Parker's service as Chairman of the British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation Board, which began since March 1, 2009, came to an end yesterday October 31, 2013.

Mr Parker had tendered his resignation to Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool.

In the letter exclusively obtained by Virgin Islands News Online dated October 2, 2013, Mr Parker told the Minister for Communications and Works, whose portfolio includes the BVIEC, that he has resigned effective October 31, 2013.

While no official reasons were given for his resignation, Mr Parker told close friends that he needed to spend more time in his business and that there was no falling out with Minister Vanterpool.

Mr Parker, a long time businessman who followed in his late father’s Keithley Parker footsteps, is the owner and Managing Director of Virgin Islands Motors Ltd. located in Duffs Bottom on the main island of Tortola and National Car Rental, the leading car rental service in the Virgin Islands.

Why is it that the Government continues to use the same people to head these Boards. Ron Potter has served on several other Board, use someone with better ideas. Search until you come up with another person. The Government is Crazy

I like the questions that @Fairness asked above - Was Mr. Potter effective on the HSA Board?
If he was effective, why do you want him removed (other than to say, he will be too stretched to be on both boards)? If you want him removed just to be vindictive, then that is no reason at all.
If he wasn't effective, he should be removed from HSA and in addition, not placed on the EC board. Who would you suggest instead, for the chair of EC?
