UPDATE: Merlin Ceasor died from blunt force trauma - Police
This was revealed in the Magistrate's Court on June 17, 2016 following an autopsy done on June 11, 2016.
“The cause of death has been determined as head injuries as a result of multiple blunt force trauma mainly to the right side of the head resulting in extensive skull fractures, brain damage and haemorrhage,” said the Police Prosecutor.
According to the Prosecution, Police had recovered from near the body a rock which appeared to be bloodied and this was collected by investigating ranks as a possible murder weapon consistent with the wounds of the deceased.
In addition, the accused was said to have abrasions in the palm of his hands and these were photographed by the Police.
According to the Prosecution, Police later in the day on June 4, 2016 learned of an amateur video which was in circulation in social media in which there was an interview between the person making the video and McKelly.
The court heard that the information from the video was lifted and stored in CD format.
McKelly spotted on CCTV
Closed circuit television footage was also retrieved showing the defendant walking in the area of the House of Assembly Offices in Wickham’s Cay dressed in blue coveralls and an orange cap at 12:19 pm.
Police said that at the time he was holding something which appeared to be a rock in his right hand behind his back.
Surveillance video footage also shows the defendant in the vicinity of the Immigration Department and he appeared to be concealing something bulky in his left pants pocket.
Some two hours after the defendant again was seen walking past the HoA Offices; however, this time he was without the cap and he appeared soiled with mud.
Police said McKelly allegedly confessed to the killing of Ceasor, saying they had a fight.
The court heard that the Prosecution needed sufficient time to prepare its case as there were still a lot of issues to be sorted out, such as enhancement of the CCT footage and other matters, before a solid case can be brought by them.
On hearing this, Senior Magistrate Tamia N. Richards gave a date of September 16, 2016 for reporting. The case is likely to be transferred to the High Court for trial by jury.
