UPDATE - Julio Henry takes on "Speak your Mind"
As first reported by this news agency, outspoken Taxi professional Julio Sam Henry is the new co-host and face of Speak your Mind, joining Courtney deCastro, who had co-host with Maduro.
Speaking exclusively to Virgin Islands News Online after the his first show, Henry said it feels great to be part of the talk show fraternity and looks forward to having positive and meaningful discussions on topical issues in the Virgin Islands.
Meanwhile, Maduro will now appear on another talk show titled “The BVI Forum” which will have its first airing this evening Sunday January 8, 2012 on CBN Channel 51 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Following controversies between JTV and Maduro, it has ended in Maduro not being part of Speak your Mind which was last aired in early December 2011 when Maduro had cut off several callers and JTV had reportedly said they would have to meet and discuss the way forward for the show.
Speaking exclusively to Virgin Islands News Online on January 8, 2012, Maduro had said his new show will be no different to what was on Speak your Mind.
“Nothing will change. I am 72 years old and want to spend my last year’s keeping our people on track with what is going on in the BVI.”
The controversial talk show host who has come in for criticism from many for cutting off callers who speak out against him, said he will not tolerate anyone “to call and bad talk him” on his show.
“You cannot call Larry King on his show and bad talk his show,” he told this news agency.
Maduro also stated that one of the reasons he would cut off callers is also to try to prevent lawsuits against him or the media house. He disclosed that when he was on ZBVI radio station, he was sued by Delta for $9,000, which he had to pay himself.
Most recently, Maduro along with JTV were also subjected to a public apology to Senior Magistrate Valerie Stephens.
On Saturday May 7, Maduro with De Castro, did not cut off callers from lashing out at the Senior Magistrate and falsely blaming her for being involved in the suspension of the seasoned Attorney Rosan-Bunbury.
On the May 14, 2011 show on the same television station, Maduro had told viewers that he was sorry for what transpired on the May 7, and that as a talk show host he has a responsibility not to disrespect citizens.
“It is a costly exercise which I am trying to avoid,” the talk show host remarked.Asked if he would have continued with Speak Your Mind if he was allowed to do so, Maduro said even if he did not have another station to go to and do a programme, he would not have “allowed his integrity to be belittled by any station".
He even revealed that on the night of the last show, he had already started making arrangements to start his new programme on CBN.
He assured viewers that often times he does not want to be harsh but speaking one’s mind is not necessarily the reflection of the constitutional right of freedom of speech. He also noted that the media outlet and the hosts also have to protect themselves from being sued.
Asked whether he will have a co-host on his new show, the candid talk show host said, “I don’t want no second man”.
