ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – “I am definitely out for the rest of this tournament. It’s an unfortunate situation, it isn’t something that you could really control, it can happen to anybody at anytime,” said Virgin Islands’ star player Mr Leslee J. Smith as he limped off the basketball court during the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) championship game last night July 3, 2014.

When Smith returned to the bench with his left knee extensively wrapped it was obvious to his team mates, fans and spectators that his prospects of continuing in the tournament were grim, something he confirmed.

This no doubt had an effect on his team as they had to continue almost half of last night’s game without him. “We just have to stay at the top of it and hope for the best,” he said, speaking exclusively to Virgin Islands News Online.

Smith said that his main reason for being in the Virgin Islands at this time is to be with his team playing basketball but things got twisted unfortunately. “It’s just a real unfortunate situation, I really didn’t want this to happen, I really don’t know what to say, I am kind of overwhelmed about the situation,” he said.

According to Smith he felt that his team got out of sync very early in the game and with him being injured so early in the game it did not auger well for the team. “I think that kind of killed the momentum of the game and I feel we have to put that to the past.”

He said that he is confident that they would be able to handle the ‘little things’ and be back on the winning track come their next game as they lost to the United States Virgin Islands last night.

VI star player Leslee J. Smith injured!

- Taken into medical centre at CBC game venue; returns to bench some minutes after

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - With just a little under seven minutes left in the 2nd quarter of the featured game tonight July 3, 2014 between the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) and the Virgin Islands (VI), star player for the latter team Leslie J. Smith went down injured to the extent that he had to be taken into the medical centre at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.

This news site understands that Smith apparently hurt his left knee, the very one he has had corrective surgery on not so long ago.

Visiting the medical centre it was evident that the VI star player was in excruciating pain with an ice pack being applied to the affected knee but medical personnel assured that he was going to be OK.

While this news site did not see exactly what transpired resulting in him falling to the ground, it was obvious that it took some time for officials to realize that the VI player was down.

Several attempts were made to get him up but he was obviously injured as he repeatedly beat the ground expressing his pain.

At the time VI had a score of 15 while USVI was on 31.

Following some minutes in the medical centre, Smith returned to the bench during the last few minutes of the 3rd quarter with his knee extensively strapped and wearing only a vest which was a clear indication he would not be playing for the remainder of the game.

I thought the game was a tam sport so if one man down they can still play. As for the crap these athletes do, no proper warm up, stretching nothing then playing with support on the good leg and none on the bad leg. The medical staff taping the knee like that creating more problems. Then we look at the coaches and medical staff who all seem to be new at this, please do not use this as an excuse. Athletes, coaches etc need to do better in injury prevention and rehab.

The BVI Team needs a coach who understands the players and most of all, who can motivate them to play ball. I'm not dissing 88, I think he's a good guy and should be involved with basketball to some extent, perhaps as an adviser or assistant coach. Someone with more zeal like Bash Brewley would do the BVI well, especially when they start off rusty like they did last night and adjustments are needed. That was a tough blow but hopefully they come out gunning tonight because Bahamas ain't no joke. We got some good youngsters on the BVI Team and it was unfortunate that we waited until we were blown out to give the guys a chance. IF the starting 5 not doing well and a blow out is on the horizon, make adjustments and nip it in the bud, don't let the guys get behind by so much then try changing things. The game was over from the 1st quarter but still felt good watching our guys fight to the end. GO BVI!

I agree. 88 shouldn't have been afraid to go to his bench right after the game started. The bench is a group of national players who are starters on their own teams. My problenm with the coach is that he is a "scripted" coach not a "situational" coach. Coaching is about "countering" and "adjustments".

Are we the Virgin Islands or not? You can barely see it on our uniform. All I see is a big "British" everywhere. Same thing with the Tourist Board sign. Like we are more British than we are Virgin Islands. Meanwhile the US Virgin Islands is proudly wearing "Virgin Islands". So they took our name and whipped our a...s on our own court. We are Pathetic.....
