UPDATE: High school teachers laud FS training
The training took place in the Learning Resource Centre of the Elmore Stoutt High School and had commenced on March 23, 2015 under the guidance of Mr Rajasegaran Krishnan, an expert on the subject from Malaysia.
About 25 teachers from the Elmore Stoutt High School, the Bregado Flax Educational Centre- Secondary Division, the Claudia Creque Educational Centre, the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies and the private Secondary Schools were involved in the training.
Speaking to this news site, some of the participants shared their experiences and said they feel ready to get back to the classroom and deliver on the subject which they admitted posed a challenge for them prior to the training.
Colleen Scatliffe-Edwards said the training was a necessity for her. “It is encouraging me to want to go back to the classroom. I am feeling more confident about what I am teaching,” she said. However, she believes that because the subject is so deep the training needs to be continuous.
On the facilitator of the training, she said, “I can’t even rate the facilitator…it is off the scale.” “The instructions were clear and to the point. He understood what we needed and suited his teaching methods to our needs. The teachers are enthusiastic about the workshop,” she said.
Andre Roberts said, “This is not really my thing…I am in IT but from the workshop I got a better understanding of the [financial services] industry. I am learning more about the industry.”
Celine Thomas said that she would rate the course 10 out of 10. “I am better prepared but I still need more information,” she said. “It is a subject that I never taught before. I had some knowledge of the subject but never enough to stand in a classroom and teach,” she said.
Meanwhile, at the opening ceremony on March 23, 2015 First Lady Mrs Lorna G. Smith OBE had encouraged the teachers to learn as much as they could about the subject of financial services.
“As you know financial services are changing by the moment and that is why the government brought in the firm of McKinsey and Company to assist us in moving to the next level and telling us effectively how we should be doing that,” she had said.
She had stated that the Virgin Islands is caught up in a very fluid situation in terms of financial services and that the VI continues to be at the top of the offshore sectors. “We are in fact number 34, of course the onshore [centres] always top…New York, Hong Kong and so on. And the BVI moved up 13 places.”

- @ opening of financial services training for secondary school teachers
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Teachers of the territory’s secondary schools have commenced one week of training in financial services to prepare them to deliver lessons in the subject to their young charges.
The training is taking place in the Learning Resource Centre of the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) and got underway yesterday March 23, 2015 under the guidance of Mr Rajasegaran Krishnan, an expert in the subject from Malaysia.
Teachers from the Elmore Stoutt High School, the Bregado Flax Educational Centre- Secondary Division, the Claudia Creque Educational Centre, the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies and the private Secondary Schools are involved in the training.
Making remarks at the opening, First Lady Mrs Lorna G. Smith OBE encouraged the teachers to learn as much as they could about the subject of financial services.
“As you know financial services are changing by the moment and that is why the government brought in the firm of McKinsey and Company to assist us in moving to the next level and telling us effectively how we should be doing that,” she said.
FS should be more sustainable
“They produced a report entitled ‘Building on a Thriving and Sustainable Financial Services Sector in the BVI’ which is a mouthful but it is really telling how our financial services should be more sustainable,” Mrs Smith said.
She added that the Virgin Islands are caught up in a very fluid situation in terms of financial services and that the VI continues to be at the top of the offshore sectors. “We are in fact number 34, of course the onshore [centres] always top…New York, Hong Kong and so on. And the BVI moved up 13 places,” she said.
“I am especially grateful to Mr Raj Krishnan, the Director of the Financial Services Institute, for the key role that he has played in assisting the committee. He is truly a marvelous teacher and we are truly fortunate to have him,” said Mrs Smith.
“Today as we begin this workshop, you are indeed laying the foundation for building capability in financial services by learning how to teach students about financial services,” she said to the teachers.
Speaking at the launch of the training, Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn said, “Mr Krishnan approached me from the Financial Services Institute to see how he could help us to make sure that we are doing a good job in the delivery of the financial services subject to the school.”
