PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI- It is a fact that pageantry on a whole allows contestants to develop and improve on many areas of their own personal lives, including self esteem, communication skills, general knowledge, and even learning to walk with high heels as in the case of newly crowned Miss Jr BVI 2015 Kiarah Moolenaar.
Moolenaar took the coveted crown from three other contestants: First Runner Up Shamoia Maduro, Julissa Rodriguez-Turnbull (Most Popular) and Rebecca Frett (Best Swimwear) when the second ever Miss Jr BVI Pageant was held at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in Paraquita Bay on July 25, 2015.
Speaking to the media after being crowned, an elated Moolenaar said the Evening Wear segment was the most challenging segment for her since she was always somewhat of a tomboy and had difficulties wearing heels at first but eventually got over it.
The Black and White affair, she continued, was the most fun segment for her because of the creativity it offered.
Final Question!
Moolenaar won Miss Poise, Miss Photogenic, Best Black and White Affair and Miss Intellect and was one of the crowd favourites. She appeared to have sealed the win when she answered the final question flawlessly.
Maduro, who won Miss Congeniality, People’s Choice Award, Best Talent and Best Evening Wear, had seemed a favourite to win, maybe until the Final Question when she was unable to gather her thoughts together for a solid response.
The Final Question was: In what way could you be a role model for the youth of the British Virgin Islands?
Maduro began answering then stopped and started over after asking for the question to be repeated. She said she would do community service and inspire youth to do same “because when one does well we all do well”.
Moolenaar said “I am hard working, dedicated, truthful and a good citizen. All these qualities already qualify me to be a role model for the British Virgin Islands. Thank you.” Her response, though short, was one of the better ones.
Meanwhile, the young queen Moolenaar said the Miss BVI Pageant experience has helped to improve her public speaking skills and she plans to represent the Virgin Islands at “all the events I need to be at and as an ambassador of the British Virgin Islands. I plan to go forward and maybe be Miss BVI.”
The new Miss Jr BVI also said she put in countless hours preparing for pageant night and even had to put away socialising with friends and sacrificed summer classes to achieve one of her dreams.
Currently studying Special Education at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, Moolenaar plans to further her studies to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education.

Let us not make negative comments about them but encourage them that failure is not final.
