ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A former prison officer was arraigned today, October 1, 2013 before the Magistrate’s court for allegedly having sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13. The defendant was not required to offer a plea to the indictable charge.

The crime, which allegedly took place between Jan 2012 – August 2013, was reported to the family and juvenile on September 11, 2013 by the child’s father.

A police investigation reportedly followed the report and it was discovered that the defendant, a 63 year old, was the boyfriend of the Virtual Complainant’s (VC’s) aunt. He was further described as a good family friend.

According to the allegations read by Crown Counsel Herbert Potter, the defendant reportedly picked up the VC from her home and took her to Brandywine Bay to “chill”. While there the child sat behind the defendant in the vehicle and their conversation allegedly turned to sex.

The defendant, who told the court that he is an employee of the Public Works Department, allegedly asked the child to let him suck her breasts and when she did not respond he allegedly did so for some 10 minutes. He later allegedly had sex with the child, despite her protests for him to stop.

According to the Crown, the actions continued several times over during 2012. The VC reportedly stayed quiet because she was fearful. The act was also alleged to have taken place at the defendant’s apartment as well as his girlfriend’s porch.

The last encounter allegedly took place in a lounge chair sometime in August, 2013. The Crown further alleged that the child told the defendant to stop and he responded by saying: “I’m taking care of you.”

He was met by officers of the police force on suspicion of having sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 16 on September 30, 2013 and reportedly told officers he had nothing to say.

He was granted $50,000 signed bail with one surety with $5000 required to be in cash. The defendant was further instructed to surrender his travel documents and report to the East End Police Station on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday between 6 A.M.-7 P.M. He is also to have no form contact with the child.

He will return to court on October 24, 2013.

Ex-Prison Officer arrested for allegedly having sex with a minor

EAST END, Tortola, VI – A man believed to be in his 60s was taken into custody late yesterday afternoon September 30, 2013 for allegedly having sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 16.

According to a reliable source close to the family, the man is likely to be charged today. This information was further confirmed by sources within the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).

Virgin Islands News Online was also told that the man is an employee of Public Works Department and is a former Prison Officer of Her Majesty’s Prison.

The child’s situation was described as a very unfortunate one since, according to a source, she allegedly had been complaining to adults in the home about the indecent act for some time.

“Is she back in the home or what I don’t know but people should not penalize young girls who come out and talk when men or family are taking advantage of them, especially sexually assaulting them,” said a source close to the family.
