SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI - Break Up The Game staged a smash and grab to overcome Majestic Express down the back straight by a half length to win the Premier’s Cup yesterday, Tuesday August 5, 2014, at Ellis Thomas Downs in a time of 1:56 flat.

The horse ridden by Victor Santiago and owned by James Penn once of Virgin Gorda and now based on St John, United States Virgin Islands, had been languishing at the back of a three horse field, after the scratching of Admission, but surged around the last bend to overtake Apollo Sky, owned by Rodney ‘Mileage’ Simmonds and then crossed the line ahead of Majestic Express.

“When we hit the last 600 I could see the other horses were tiring and I knew if I waited my time I could either cut the corner or go around on the outside. I worked out good man!” commented jockey Santiago.

Race one, the Monroe Thomas Memorial, went to Kaylen Wild Cat. The Axel Ritter Special went to Fort Pyramid ridden by Kirwin John, covering the 7 furlongs in a time of 1:20 and four. The Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) sponsored Ellis Thomas Memorial of over a mile was won by Selena’s So Mad in a time of 1:46 and three.

After trouble at the gate the horse, with Hiram Rivero on board and owned by Ira Callwood out of the Quiet Storm Stables finished ahead of Orithyia by half a length.

Miss Homer was third and True Essence, who also suffered from issues at the Gate, came 4th.

The Randolph ‘Jawa’ Heskey Memorial also over a Mile saw Sin Miras Atras owned by Rodney Simmonds and ridden by Kirwin John win in a time of 1:47 and four from Buy Buy Buy and Warriors Cove in third.

The Open Sprint Classic, over five furlongs, went to Really Uptown, who led wire to wire in a time of 59 and two, which is a new course record.

Kanavayen finished second and Mae Ruler third, a result which was verified after a judges enquiry following the lodging of a foul call by Kanavayen’s jockey.

The Jerriel Thomas Memorial Handicap, over one mile, was won Stephen Got Better, after being slow out of the gate. The winning time was 1:46 and one ahead of Holy Barbara and Southern Dunn.

The final race of a day which finished in the early evening gloom, was the Angel “Scratchie” Malone Memorial and was won by Still Unbroken from St Thomas, in a time of 1:52 and three. Halo’s Midas Touch was second and Trading Secrets third.
