LONG LOOK, Tortola, VI- Reminding that slaves in the Virgin Islands were the first in the Caribbean to be freed and given property due to the kindheartedness of Quakers, talk show host Edmund G. Maduro suggested that it was ungrateful for descendants of those freed slaves to have the Quakers' burial site in Long Look overgrowing with bushes.

“We must not forget my people that the British Virgin Islands, within the Caribbean region if not the world, was the first place where slaves were set free by their owners because they were taught in those days to be property. They were taught to be owned by their masters. The people in Long Look were set free by their owners who were Quakers and given the land. We were the first in the Caribbean to enjoy that,” Mr Maduro said on the EGM Show on September 29, 2016.

According to Mr Maduro it was one of his grand-daughters who actually brought it to his attention that the burial site was overgrown with bushes.

“I will never forget the day I was going up to East End with my grandchildren and I said to them ‘see that’s where the Quakers were buried. That is where some of them were buried.’ My first grandchild almost cried. And she said grandpa, we are very ungrateful. She said you mean to say the Quakers could set us free, give us their land and we can’t keep their graves up to date and clean. She said grandpa that is not good, that is ungratefulness.

“I truly will not forget that. You go up there right now. The stones are all broken down…and I have learnt from that little child,” said Mr Maduro.

History has it that in 1776 one Samuel Nottingham, a Quaker, freed 25 slaves and gave to them 50 acres (200,000 m2) of land in Long Look in Tortola, and directed them to cultivate it for the common good.

According to further research, Tortola was originally settled by Quakers in 1726 and John Pickering, a wealthy planter and leader of the Quaker community, became the first Lieutenant Governor of Tortola in 1741.

"us"?, I've never been a slave and neither have you. As bad as slavery was, life in Africa at the time was pretty bad as well and without the curse of slavery on our ancestors we'd be living in Africa today. Thanks, but I'll take the islands as home.

Mr. Maduro since you so know about your history, then you should have taught your grand daughter what she need to know about our history along with our true identity in that way she wouldn't be white-wash.

    In other words instead of coming on the media to talk about slave masters- educate about our black race;
    where did we came from?
    who do we belong to?
what can we as a black race do to unite?
    How can we rule ?
    etc.

We need black leaders in the virgin Islands to lead us in the right way
Self-education is the best solution for the black dispora.

We need to wake up! knowledge is powerful and once we as a black race get that, we will rule again! the whites would be afraid of us once we know the truth.

So this is my challenge to you reading this; know your history! and here is a start for you, read this book - WAKE UP TO YOUR TRUE IDENTITY by Maurice Lindsay, if you cant purchase the book you can read a sample of it on amazon and I'm sure once you read the sample you will purchase the book.

Edmund contrary to what you were taught it was a rebellion and they did not give us land we fought for it. People like you who up and down on the Governor saying you want justice should know nothing is giving. But when history is written by some people it will be kind to them especially when the oppressor and not the oppressed wrote it.

I was taught that the name long look came from the Quakers going to the top of the hill and looking out to the channel and saying "that's a long look". However according to the ancestors when the rebellion began the slaves ran up the mountain to hide. The slave masters sent up their dogs after them and the slaves they killed them. Then after some days they came down to find water by the ghut saying" Boy that was a long look" that is why it was named Nottingham estate and Long look by the slaves.

That is why Edmund people cant take you seriously however the graves should be kept clean because it is all history of where we came from and what we went through.

Actually to some extent, he is right.

Samuel and Mary Nottingham, who were Quakers gave their 25 former slaves, the cotton plantation which was called Longlook as a means to sustain themselves, after they had already bought their freedom (no rebellion involved).

However, Samuel and Mary Nottingham are not buried at the burial ground known as the Quaker burial ground and his link to Long Look is incorrect.

I suppose they could have never given the land to those who they had once enslaved. Kept it for themselves and their decendents. God taught us about forgiveness for a reason. There were people that opposed it. There were people that fought against it. Thank God it was abolished. Perhaps these Quakers were happy to give the land and walk away knowing it was never enough compensation to make ammends. I'm not saying thank them or celebrate their memory but to say it is fine go forget and let their burial place purposely go to ruin makes you no better than anyone that once upheld the slave mentality. Be better. Rise above. Forgive. Be free.

Yes even after slaves been freed most black people have names belong to the slave masters and never try to find out where their name came from. We been given 3 and 4 names for what each day you been called by one get an African name that you know what it means.

People need to remember the bad things that happened in the past (or in history for that matter) so the next generations to come do not allow them to be repeated or happen to them. However, as long as evil exists in the world, attempts will continue to repeat these bad things. It only takes a few generations to forget bad things and the perpetrators know that and is able to repeat those bad things on others but in a different format. It is for this reason, we should pay attention to the history being taught to us in school, from the pulpit, and from parents, family and others as it will come back to your memory as I have discovered. Not only that! I have discovered that some of the history taught to me have some confirmations,, but also half truths, lies, or important information left out. Thank God for those persons who have been uncovering the truth. Residents of this earth, there are some bad things happening right now but on a global scale (READ THE NEWS CAREFULLY ! ! ) , and the main stream media and other methodologies are are being used to hurt people in general. For example, this month is cancer awareness month and we are being fooled so eloquently to believe that there is no cure when there is. The traditional doctors are being lied to and so the TPTB get away with it as they work with governments, big Pharma, ABC spy agencies, health regulatinging bodies, food giants with GMOs in your food, global organisations such as the W.#.#. and the U.#. and as well with the likes of that computer mogul foundation B&M (close those gates please) who go around hurting the masses with vaccinations. They have been successful in killing or maiming millions in their stomping ground of Africa with the HPV vaccinations and now has been able to get Anguilla government to administer it to young girls. People, when those girls grow up, we are going to observe that Anguilla population is going to radically decline. As for this Zika virus. It is a ruse to prepare us to take a vaccination that I understand TPTB are trying out already. TPTB was not successful to get mass vacinnation done when the SARS, H1N1 or swine or bird flu, dengue, and chikgunya. Back to the no cure for cancer lie. We are being told that chemo and radiation are the best treatment. Well the only thing you can do now is eat healthy as much as you can, lead a healthy lifestyle and prayer to protect your mind. Long winded but some of the global news that you see on TV and read are false flags, only some, to distract us from paying attention to important legislation causing rights to be lost, movements of personnel and equipment in place for the big roundup and most importantly one world government. Remember how Hitler got to kill millions of Germans and other ethnic groups. He for years used his long speechless to promote that he can bring a life of euphoria until the gas camps. Pay attention to the recent upgrades of out of the way shopping Walmart mall

The quakers fought the system of their own culture to emancipate their slaves before even the US. They were so behind. It is a shame that people are so tied up with ancient history, horrible or not, that they are losing any evidence of that history for future generations. It is short-sighted. One is doomed to repeat it. "Memory has become a sacred duty of all people of good will"-- that means protect history because it matters. If you want to protect quaker history, there is the International Friends society (Quakers) who I think travels the globe restoring sites.
Might be worth contacting them. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. It was a dark history all over the world. At least some try to do something about it or did it earlier than most nations. This is part of BVI legacy and should be taught accurately. Vernon, will you give a lecture?

Virgin Islanders, we are heading in the right direction. The first untruth to uncover is the cover up in the Bible. This is what held us bound for so many years. We were not told that the Bible was a story book about black people. We were not told that the people who Moses led out of Egypt were black people. We were not told that the so-called Jews of Israel are not the original descendants. In fact, there were no people called Jews in Moses' times. The children of Israel, Israel being a person were black people who were enslaved in Egypt, not these Ashkenazi Jews from Khazaria, Eastern Europe. We were not told that the these Jews are from Europe, are converted to the teachings of the true Hebrew people, that the State of Israel was created by USA and UN for these converted Jews to maintain a presence in the Middle East. Oh, there is so much to learn and we got to start learning fast, least this brain-washing continue. Check it out, and here is another site to study from Deuteronomy 28.org. The present-day Jews stole the birthright of the Black Hebrew Israelite people. Is this why they are after us to eradicate our presence from the earth? It will never happen. We are the chosen people of God. The quicker we know our identity, the quicker we can live with authority. Study, Study, Study. Check out Marcion of Sinope who wrote the New Testament.. start reading.
