BEEF ISLAND, VI- Our newsroom can confirm that local Kareem A. Durante aka ‘Blocker’ has been identified as the shooting victim in the incident of last night May 16, 2016 at Long Bay beach, Beef Island.

Mr Durante, 28, of Belle Vue on the main Island of Tortola suffered a gunshot to the back, which allegedly exited his body. He is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Peebles Hospital and is said to be in serious condition.

According to our newsroom’s sources, Mr Durante has suffered damages to the lungs and liver as a result of the gunshot.

The incident occurred sometime around 9pm at a social event that was headlined by a popular local band.

Virgin Islands News Online was also told that another person was injured as persons rushed for cover following the shooting.

“Upon hearing the shots the crowd scattered, causing a girl to fall and got trampled on. She too was taken to hospital but seems to be coming around,” the source said.

Host of the Morning Ride Show on ZROD 103.7 FM, Paul 'Gadiethz' Peart said he was playing music and doing his "usual Digicel promotion" when he heard explosions, however, he didn't take it to mean "anything" at the time.

The radio DJ said he wished a speedy recovery for those injured.

Meanwhile, Police Information Officer Diane Drayton confirmed the shooting incident late last night.

“One male was injured and is being treated at hospital. He remains in stable condition. Police investigations are ongoing,” Drayton said.

We will bring you more details as they become available.

I agree with you both, but I also think that the governing body for this venue need to better equip the space with the proper lighting etc. since this is a place that is often used for events such as this. you shouldn't have an event that is expected to draw a big and young crowd including the "undesirables" and not have the place properly lit, its secluded and far reach from the main land. something needs to be done.

I blame this whole toxic environment that we find ourselves living under squarely on the governor and NDP doorsteps. They should all be ashamed of what they have turned our country into. Horrible example of Effective Leadership!

Maybe you should blame the people who are pulling the triggers. You know, the people who are shooting other people. They are the guilty ones.

@wtf, who enact Laws and who are responsible for them being enforced? Who is responsible for cultivating and promoting the proper climate, temperament and culture of the Land? Isn't it the (Servant) Leaders of the Land? Who are those? The government is like an organization, who enact the rule and make sure that they are followed? We are simply losing…Think.

People should be responsible for themselves and not relying on any govt for survival. The community should be strong as a group and promote the proper culture and temperament. We have long gotten away from the "it takes a village to raise a child" mentality and it shows. Blaming the political party in charge is a cop out.

"the proper climate, temperament and culture of the land":. In answer to your question, these important ingredients of a society was eroded by the influx of immigrants from places where civility is not known to the culture. You blame the Gov for the erosion and there is some truth because immigration laws are responsible for who come and who stays and becomes woven into the fabric of a society.
No problem. The Chinese are coming. The Asians are coming and not a minute too soon.

@ stupid: crime and punishment go hand & hand; BVI have the best prison on earth so after the crime is committed the punishment is very sweet; you can order your own food, have flat screen tv, cell phone and smoke some good high-grade...this territory have laws on the books but law enforcement and punishment is an isuue
      • Flashlight (17/05/2016, 16:18) Like (5) Dislike (0) Reply
Yep. All of that is true but you have to catch the person(s) first and convict, because if they are not convicted then all those laws are for naught. Sometimes I am happy when I hear that the police have persons in custody assisting with the investigations, then when you look you reading that those persons were released without charge. We have to come forward and tell what we know, the police can't get through by themselves. However, it seems that there is a lot of protecting going on because a lot of the times a lot of us have information but remain silent.

We don't need higher gun penalties that's doesn't work to lesser or stop crimes there are other countries giving 10and 15 years for gun charge and guess what there I crime rates are still way higher .what we need to stop having customs and officers helping these young man come in the bvi with there guns .some of them actually wait until there friends are at custom to come in with those guns.

@ sense: the territory needs more costal patrols; ever day you pass road reef the police vessel is always tied up at the dock...the criminal element is now roaming the streets and continue to rule the seas because not enough police patrols: progess of the territory is good but the we are paying is very veey high..

the security of this territory falls under the governor: some of us busy asking him to investigate this and investigate that: call on the governor along with his new commissioner of police to investigate the root cause of crime in this territory...right now it is simply black on black incidences but when the crimes spills over to the whites then you get more action from the governor and the police.....these days hardly a month goes by without some form for gun crime...most of which are unsolved

Hope he makes a full recovery. That said we need to stop the foolishness of wasting money on building stupid, dangerous 3 foot high sidewalks that costs millions of dollars and put this money toward law enforcement. If the crime rate continues no tourists will come and we will be left with nothing as we have polluted our waters and the dump is now polluting the air we breath. Stop crime and good things will follow, the community needs to unite and turn in these gunman, we know who they are. Dont wait until its one of your family members who get slaughtered, do the RIGHT thing an turn them in.
