ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Just as was first and accurately reported by our newsroom last week, the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), led by 73 year old Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith (AL), held its elections last evening, Tuesday February 6, 2018 to fill the post of party chairman and other officers.

The post of President of the party founded in 1998 is held by Dr Smith and was not on the table for elections.

The NDP meeting was held at The Moorings on Wickham's Cay II, Tortola, and attracted a full house of about 90 plus members, as they were excited about having an internal election since one was not held in years, according to one of the founders who spoke to our newsroom this morning.

Louis Potter, the outgoing Chairman who was at the helm for over six years and who enjoyed the support of Premier Smith, was not nominated from the floor to continue.

All in the family

Troy E. Christopher, the son of Honourable Delores Christopher (R5) who has shown her independence on public policy and who is always willing to buck the party, was nominated for the post of Chairman.

In addition, the former Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee (VIF&FC) Chairwoman, Kishma A. Baronville, was also nominated for the post of Chairperson. Mr Christopher had a land slide victory, with some 77 votes to Ms Baronville's 20 votes. It is reported that Ms Baronville had the backing of the Hons Smith, Vanterpool and Walwyn crowd. Some have claimed that the three elected Members have helped put both the party and country backwards.

Next up was elections for Deputy Chairman and there were two nominations from the floor- that of Michael A. Turnbull Phd, the brother of current Second District Representative, Honourable Melvin M. Turnbull and Bernadette Brathwaite. When the vote was counted, Mr Turnbull had 86 votes to Ms Brathwaite's 10.

When is election for President?

It is unclear when the party will deal with the post of President held by Premier Smith. It is our newsroom's understanding that most in the party are not pleased with his leadership; however, there will be a nasty flight to replace him.

At the NDP election meeting last evening, all elected members were present except both Junior Ministers Hons Marlon A. Penn (R8) and Archibald C. Christian (AL) and Deputy Premier Dr The Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering (R7).

The next general election in the Virgin Islands is constitutionally due by the first quarter of 2019 and is expected to be another showdown between the NDP and the Opposition Virgin Islands Party (VIP) headed by Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), the Chairman of the VIP.

This kind of mentality is why we are stuck in the place where we are now. I can't believe people are still making the following statements "NDP is STILL the best hope for the BVI!" How?????? There is no hope with NDP! None! They might be the only options on the table right now but best hope? #bullshit

Please...the NDP is the best way to a bad future. Most of us will take our chances with the VIP president Dr. Swonde Wheatley any day over this joker that thinks he knows everything and is so disrespectful.

Louis “Bouy” Potter, you had a good run. Everything has a season and your season is up in regards to leading the NDP. It is time for millennials to get wings; let them fly. There are other areas you can contribute in. Bon voyage olde boy!

Back benchers got the most power in the country collectively. They need to exercise it.. Thats the change we need. Join with the opposition and make the change.. Fahie Premier, Tourism and Education ...Marlon Deputy, Works, trade and Finance.. Frazer Labour, enviroment and communication. . Mitch Health and social development... Alvera, Culture, Agriculture and Youth affairs.....Archie Continued as Junior Tourism Minister.. Delores as junior minister of Trade and works... . New government.. Easy. Great. A new direction. This the best immediate best option...

........is a natural fit with the rest of the elected ndp. Just like them he thinks anyone who doesn't agree with him are stupid. Just like them he is vindictive to anyone who opposes him. Just like them he thinks that he knows it all.

Once he handles this NDP post the same way he handles JTV and everything else he touches then we can count on the NDP being more dead than before.

Troy older than Andrew and Showande so what's the point? Also this thing about young people taking over is a wrong and dangerous mentality to have. You always need a balance of young and old.

I was starting to doubt the NDP but I'm glad to see they are now getting organized and letting the young people lead the way.

The present political system is antiquated and only serves the rich and powerful. Until we go to a multi party system and reform the campaign finance system we will continue to have these minority governments

No wonder the national democratic party is in trouble. They not only lack any backbone to stand up for anything that is significant, they are also the WORST negotiators for the benefit of their constituents. I would not be at all surprised that they make minimal gains, if any, and get wip out in the 2019 elections. They are the party of DUH.
