‘Treatment’ for COVID-19 ordered- Premier Fahie
While there is no known cure for COVID-19, the world is now desperate to find ways to slow the spread of the Novel Coronavirus and to find effective treatments.
Premier Fahie did not disclose the name of the “treatment” the Territory has ordered and Health Minister Hon Carvin Malone (AL) did not respond to our queries up to the time of publication; however, several treatments have been used in different countries with mixed results.
“We were aiming for 5000 treatment but will get in the region of 3 to 4 thousand. No one is guaranteeing it but it is the most recommended one at this time,” Premier Fahie said on ZBVI 780 AM.
Drugs being administered against COVID-19
The United States of America (USA) has authorised the use of antimalarial drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine to treat coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Hydroxychloroquine & Chloroquine
“With no “adequate, approved and available” alternative, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is allowing the use of the antimalarial drugs hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine to treat coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19),” Live Science reported on April 7, 2020.
France is also one of the few countries that also permit the drugs to be used for patients with COVID-19.
Opposition; however, has come from the European Medicines Agency, the European Union’s (EU) pharmaceutical regulator, which reiterated earlier last week that studies have not yet documented that the drugs can effectively treat COVID-19.
But in the USA, the FDA's chief scientist Denise Hinton was less troubled by such concerns.
According to a World Report by medical journal, The Lancet, on April 11, 2020, Hinton wrote: “Based on the totality of scientific evidence available to [the] FDA, it is reasonable to believe that chloroquine phosphate and hydroxychloroquine sulfate may be effective in treating COVID-19.”
Drugs showing promise
According to The Lancet, an oral drug called EIDD-2801 has shown promise in test-tube experiments with human lung and airway cells, scientists reported online April 6 in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
The drug might even be more efficient at blocking the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, than remdesivir, a drug being tested against COVID-19 in clinical trials that began in March.
Japan flu drug
A drug developed by Fujifilm Toyama Chemical in Japan is showing promising outcomes in treating at least mild to moderate cases of COVID-19, Live Science previously reported.
The antiviral drug, called favipiravir or Avigan, has been used in Japan to treat influenza, and last month, the drug was approved as an experimental treatment for COVID-19 infections, Pharmaceutical Technology reported.
So far, reports suggest the drug has been tested in 340 individuals in Wuhan and Shenzhen. "It has a high degree of safety and is clearly effective in treatment," Zhang Xinmin, of China's science and technology ministry, said March 17, 2020, The Guardian reported.

Trump has been trying to push it in the US with little cooperation from the medical community including Fauci.

If you get a fever, this is the body's way of fighting the virus, if you take paracetamol or ibuprofen etc to reduce the fever your body will have to work longer to get over the virus and can increase the mortality rate of patient..

If we apply social distancing and basic hygiene to our everyday lives we will be one step closer to eradicating this virus.
This is going to be a long recovery period for everyone so we must prepare for the long haul.
We will know when the cases that we do not currently have, become cases that we have ...How will the infection be disbursed and we may never know.

I am sure the learned Doctors could shed more light on the drug, its effectiveness and its side effects. Do the right thing and bring them to the forefront. Premier and Carvin can deal with policy, legislation, stimulus and reassuring the people. The hallmarks of a great leader is his willingness to recognize and understand his limitations and delegate to make up for those limitations.
@LB Everybody as in you? I tune in to Trinidad and Tobago Synergy on flow and who was there? The CMO answering questions and detailing updated information on the virus. Andrew Cuomo had his panel there to answer questions pertaining to the medical specialized field. Dr. Fauci has been the medical voice of reason. Trump says we want to open up the country by the end of the month while Fauci is saying let us wait and see it's too early to make that call.
We want to hear from those in the medical field. Let them give us details on what this drug is about. Let them advise us on the preparedness of their frontline staff. What the Quarantine experience is about. It lends more credibility coming from a medical expert who has the knowledge and whose priority first and foremost is health care. This would have been a great time to feature our BVI medical system. His voice should be independent.
