Traffic lights for Tamarind Tree junction under consideration

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Mark Vanterpool, is definitely considering installing traffic lights in the vicinity of the Road Town Police station, which is an apparent magnet for accidents.

Over the past few weeks, there have been three major accidents in the vicinity of the Tamarind Tree, and luckily there were no deaths.

Speaking exclusively to this news agency, the “action man” revealed that he had a meeting on January 12 with Public Works Department (PWD) officials “along those lines and they are doing some preliminary work on that”.

“...in terms of not just traffic lights but the entire street along there from the other traffic lights to that point, where we have concerns about the amount of traffic that is there especially in the peak times. So we are definitely considering the possibility of traffic lights at that point,” he added.

Asked if there are other locations where traffic lights may be erected, Minister Vanterpool divulged that it is a possibility since his team has identified other smaller areas where traffic lights can be installed.

“So yes there are possibilities in other areas,” he further stated.

I am all for this, in my opinion lights should have been put here a long time ago. We dont need those big ugly looking lights that hang across the road - for want of a better word the light on a stick is fine. The tree must stay though!

Usually i would agree with a roundabout, however in this case we do not have many nice loking trees in Tortola and that one should stay, Nibbs is too close the road, the field is right there, there is not the room to put an effective roundabout there. Therefore lights are the answer. It doesnt work as it is due to too many idiot drivers not knowing the rules nor having common courtesy. Something has to be done.

let the people do over their drivers license test every five years or longer. that money can go towards education or building up departments in need. so many will fail and redo the test over and over then quit, so less cars will be on the road. when less cars on the road they wouldn't have to be fighting to make a turn. beside placing traffic lights everywhere we need to find a way to control vehicular traffic. I'm just saying.

Traffic lights maybe a solution, but we also have to think about the traffic that backs up from the school all the way back to the tree. You may have the green light but may have to stay put because you just cannot move forward.
