Too many press conferences from unelected Governor- Skelton-Cline

- calls for Governor's Office to be relegated to ceremonial one
ZBVI 'Honestly Speaking' radio moderator, Claude O. Skelton-Cline says it remains concerning the number of press conferences the current Governor, H.E. Augustus J.U. Jaspert is having, pointing out that previous VI governors, never injected themselves into public life and politics to the extent of Mr Jaspert. Photo: VINO/File

BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI - Saying it is concerning the number of press conferences the current Governor H.E. Augustus J.U. Jaspert is having, commentator Mr Claude O. Skelton-Cline has pointed out that previous Governors serving in the Virgin Islands have never injected themselves into public life and politics to the extent of Mr Jaspert.

"Go back and count how many times Governor Duncan had press conferences for the time that he was here... and I promise you that you can count the time that he had press conferences on your four fingers," Skelton-Cline said on the Tuesday, July 5, 2020, edition of his radio show, Honestly Speaking, on ZBVI 780 AM.

"Go back a step further and count how many times the then Governor McCleary, how many press conferences he had. I agree with Hon Vanterpool because I think that is the spirit of the constitution, that the office of the Governor is by in law, should be a ceremonial one," he said.

Opposition Member Hon Mark H. Vanterpool (R4) at the June 23, 2020, sitting of the House of Assembly had said the Governor suddenly has more powers than before and accused him of trying to intimidate Premier Andrew A. Fahie (R1) in his governance of the Territory.

Governor should be a figurehead - Hon Vanterpool

"This whole concept where the Governor of this country got certain more powers than before, I don't know where it came from, I grew up hearing the Governor was a figurehead... he was just there to be the Queen's representative," Hon Vanterpool said.

Skelton-Cline said the Governor's office, therefore, needs to be relegated to a ceremonial one. "There's no way a Governor should have this much access to our public."

Governor Jaspert hosts an unprecedented monthly series of press conferences called 'Catch-up with the Governor,' where he updates the public on a number of issues, including a question and answer session with the press.

According to Skelton-Cline, "There's no way a Governor should be injecting himself or herself in the local politics of this day. They are not elected, we elected 13 people to our House of Assembly, we have a Cabinet... that's the way it needs to be."

Yo Cline, do you have a fetish with this governor?
Your obsession with Governor Jaspert is getting obnoxious. You need to chill out. Really!

Mr. Preacher man sounds like a scorned lover whenever he talks about the governor. I don't know what happened between them but he clearly needs some counseling to help him get over the hurt.

This is so unfortunate to read"Governor should be a figurehead" well coupled with the fact that a lot of these investigations finding are been played with and passed like a hot potato, One could say that is what it seems that the Governor's office is so but where would this country be if people like Mark felt they had no one or system to answer too. The Governor has to keep the people inform because he is head of state.

I am not too sure why this person has so much entrail hatred towards the Governor. Is he being used as a mouth piece for other people with a hidden agenda? If I were in a position to advise the UK on the matter thought , here is what I will suggest; At the end of this Governor's tenure, I will not appoint a Governor for the BVI. I would allow the Deputy Governor to act, pull a seat with a few pints and wait for it. Here is what will happen. In cases where there is no expat host to fight with, there will be an implosion ( not that I am insinuating that the BVI cannot govern itself) however, we will start to fight amongst our selves. That has been the cause of our past down falls.

Out dept governor where??? Stupess. Ever been in the same circle as that man. Stupessss again. If it wasn’t for his qualifications (paper) wise he wouldn't have been selected either. What y’all beed to do is encourage ppl like Claude to show respect where its due and right now its due to the Governor whether he likes him or not. As as far as I’m concerned claude is only behaving that way Becuz he is one of the “righteous” tolians who feel they need no governance u less its from him or someone he is in agreement with AKA BVIslander. Y’all need to stop and start setting better examples for the youth (the little with common sense and sole dignity) cuz we all know we lacking such in this bvi community. It’s sickening. Stop encouraging this man with his foolery and allow the Governor to do his job.

I know what you are saying, but Lawd, if we had a Belonger of any color as governor, the citizens of this BVI would be in peril. A local Governor would offer no checks and balance and this place is barely surviving the chaos, corruption and lack of transparency by elected government. And further division amongst the people of this territory would only grow. We are already all divided (skin color, island ethnicity, society people vs working class, etc). No need to add to the madness. They also need to keep the Police Commissioner as an expat...simply get one who won't bow to pressure.

At first I thought CSC had a point but when he say the governor holding conferences to update the people and ask and answer questions Hahaha... Wha wrong wid that??? I like his interacting. Hahaha, CSC try a stronger argument. I don't know, I like CSC's jokes but I like the governors approach as well. He said that is what he was going to do from day one. He is younger than most of the other governors is he not? So naturally, his approach would be different. He is working. He is also a father, husband and friend so please show some respect CSC.... Hahahaha....

IF a Governor isn't involved, then we blame him for not taking the interest of the Territory seriously. If he takes an interest in doing his job, he's too involved. Whether I like him or not, Gov Jaspert is the most interactive Governor we've had in quite some time. Big-up to Governor Jaspert for doing his job. CSC go do what the ViP has contracted you to do and stop running you damn mouth so much trying to confuse and distract the people. Right now, I trust the Governor more than I trust you.

Script says People are destroyed for the lock of knowledge and understanding and understanding
Listern sir script says that we ate to respect and pray for men in the authority because it is God who rules in the affairs of men and its he who sets up and pull down governments and promotions doesn't comes from man or from west end eastend north or south its comes from God , so as a man who claim profess to be a preacher ( which i know better ) thats not godly behavior, you need to go back to the cross because you lock wisdom.

A governor of this territory is damned he if he does and damned if he doesn't. Let Gov Gus do his job. At least he's taking an interest, which is much more than I can say for previous Govs. It's apparent CSC has stuff to hide or he wouldn't be running his mouth constantly. I think he doth protest too much and perhaps the Gov should really investigate.

There is a role for a consultant and a role for a leader. If you want to be a radical outspoken citizen, that's your privilege. You can't be a consultant and leading the government with your views. I don't disagree with all of your points but as a consultant, I think you are crossing the line.
