ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A member of the public who called into the Speak Out BVI radio show on ZBVI 780 AM on Tuesday night August 19, 2014 said it is time for the Territory to seek its independence from Great Britain.

The caller who did not reveal his name said that he is among the five percent of the citizenry who want independence for the Virgin Islands.

"I am one of the five percenters who want independence for my country," said the caller.

“Even as an independent country we are still going to spend American dollars… it is not going to change,” he said.

“I don’t care one way or another [about the new Governor]. I want independence,” the man insisted, following the host of the show Doug Wheatley asking what his thoughts were on the arrival of the new Governor His Excellency John S. Duncan OBE and his recent statements regarding the Commission of Inquiry into the Ports Project.

“Whether the Governor come or he don’t come it doesn’t bother me. I want independence,” said the caller.

given th decision-making process the government has demonstrated, thank goodness for UK watching over us.
We need a government that respects the laws and the people.

VIP have us with a 20million dollar debt to Global Water. BiWater payout will top that amount and with the lack of intellect and comprehension among those members and their supporters, we are on track for independence and purgatory with the majority of a population from now failed independent Caribbean countries. Sooner or later, how can we miss..It is what we do best as people. Self destruct as usual.

That person calling for independence sounds like an illiterate fool I wonder if he understands what independence is all about. Is he contributing to the territory right now? If this territory gets independence right now, it will be a disaster. We ante not far from dictatorship right now. My brother be careful what you ask for as you might just get it. BVIslanders only must choose for this territory. We do not need sell outs.

You obviously are not operating in reality....the BVI does not exist in a vacuum and even with all our education will not change the fact that the BVI cannot survive independence. We have no real resources...almost everything is imported. Our main economic pillar Financial Services strength is contingent on external factors. Our stability is based on our association with the UK if this is taken away ..we will no longer be looked at as a stable country for investments. Please stop your ignorant talk and do some more homework on the pros and cons of independence.

    your an idiot,
the country would lose most of its revenue, as the trust companies would bail out overnight, due to exactly this type of crazy attitude.
If you like fishing and farming on a hillside, then yes, lets go this route !!

Independence? Redardless of how we feel about being a procterate of the UK our systems are not mature enough for independence. Having the FCO looking over our shoulders is actually a good thing given that our politicians cannot be left to themselves to do what is right on behalf of the entire people of this country which I love so dearly. The politicians have proved this over and over. Left to themselves they would be our worst enemy. They would sell the BVI to the high bidder while enriching themselves and those close to them at the expense of unborn children and their children to come. I take no pleasure in saying this but remaining a UK Overseas Territory is best for us all. We would be in a much better position had it not been for the poor financial management that has dogged us for years. While I am no fan of the Crown I am a fiscal conservative and I believe in good Governance, a lean civil service and high output.

let me know when the bvi go independence so I can pack my bags and book my flight.

As a bvi Islander independence will be a disaster for the bvi. please learn form other Caribbean islands.
If independence is so good, why so many people from independence countries are coming here.

    THINK FOR A SECOND

Emty Barels makes a whole lot of noise; Some people may be mis-educated while others are uneducated, but it is for the educated to tell the foolish uneducated to just shut-up and go find something to play with. (Ask this same caller who sends the Governor and why; And I am willing to bet money he don't know the answer, and that is all I have to say!)

Until there is no longer first class, second class or no class citizens in the BVI or the continued oppression of the powers of the nation ceased to exist, May God help us if we go inependent.
