Tiger’s Mischief found dead in stables
The 6-year-old mare was found dead on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cows Bay even though left in apparent good health by its trainer, Winston Maduro aka Rass Boom.
Owner of Tiger’s Mischief, Roger White aka Kumo said, “When the trainer took her in the afternoon [Monday] he told me the horse was alright and everything was good, she was jolly as she normally would be and she had eaten all her food and everything.”
White, of Anegada and the owner of Zion Stables, said when the trainer turned up the following day at 4 A.M. he found the horse dead and called him shortly afterwards. According to the horse owner, the trainer said he couldn’t understand how this had happened.
He related that there was no disturbance within the stable and the trainer reportedly found it just as he had left it on the previous day. He presumed that the animal suffered a heart attack based on reports from the trainer, but said there was no way that this could be confirmed on the island.
According to White, who owns two other horses, tests are not usually done within the Territory to determine what is wrong or what really happened to a horse, therefore his horse was not taken to a veterinarian. He stated that in the United States and other places, veterinarians may come to do an autopsy on the horse or take blood samples to determine the actual cause of death. Calls to verify this claim through a veterinarian within the Department of Agriculture were unsuccessful up to post time.
The sudden death of Tiger's Mischief takes us back to late 2011 when Memuneh of the L&B Stables had developed a major abscess on its rump and its Veterinarian had related to owner Violet 'Letty' Hodge that the horse may have been injected with a toxic substance that resulted in the infection.
Mrs Hodge had told Virgin Islands News Online that the infection was so bad that the Veterinarian squeezed out enough inflammation to fill a bucket. Mrs Hodge had also called on Government to assist with the securing of the stables at Sea Cows Bay.
Tiger’s Mischief had not been running for some time and was reportedly in training for upcoming races at Ellis Thomas Downs in August. The owner said he was not tremendously affected by the loss of his horse since he dealt with death as he dealt with life. “I don’t let [any] form of death hold me down for any time because it [death] must happen, you must live and die,” White said while stating that the animal was a good animal but he had to move on.
White felt upcoming horse races shouldn’t be significantly affected by the death of his horse as the Association still had sufficient horses to pull off the August races. However, his opinion may not be shared by others.
Commenting on the tragic occurrence, President of the Virgin Islands’ Horse Owners’ Association, Mrs Karen Smith-Aaron said, “The loss of any horse has implications because it just makes it less horses that we have available and we don’t have enough from the start, so it makes it even worse.”
The President said condition sheets are being put out to see how many submissions are made in order to determine whether races can be hosted ahead of the upcoming August races at Ellis Thomas Downs.
There are also races scheduled for July 14, 2013 at the racetrack in Sea Cows Bay. “We basically have to wait until St Thomas [horse race event] runs because submissions depend on how they come off of that race,” Mrs Smith-Aaron added.
She further disclosed that horses may not arrive from St Thomas for the July races and this is “up in the air” for the moment but the Association remains positive that races can be hosted at the local track next month.
At least two horses suffered injuries at Ellis Thomas Downs over the past year, including Lake Texoma (July 2012) and Bud White (June 2013); both horses were subsequently euthanized (put down) as a result of their injuries.
