PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI – Tichina Penn, 23 years old, was last night crowned the first Miss Jr BVI when she breezed through the competition taking seven of nine prizes apart from the crown in a keenly contested pageant held at the Eileen Parson’s Auditorium, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, Paraquita Bay, Tortola.

Miss Penn was judged to have been very outstanding to the point of claiming the prizes for the Miss Intelligence, Best Black and White Wear, Best Talent, Best Evening Wear, Miss Congeniality, Miss Poise and Best Swimwear.

The other two special prizes of Miss Photogenic and Miss Popularity went to contestant #2 Miss Ronique McMillian who was also judged 2nd Runner up. First Runner up position went to contestant #4 Sylvanna Charles.

Those who did not place in any way in the competition were contestant #3 Shona Rogers and #5 Sheverne George.

The ladies contested in six main segments: Introduction, Self-designed Swimwear, Black and White Affair, Talent, Evening Wear and Intelligence, and they showed a high level of class, bravery, talent and courage.

The staging of the pageant last night gave the 2012 Miss East End/Long Look the opportunity to bring her reign to an end since there was not such a pageant this year. The first ever Miss Jr BVI pageant replaced the Miss East End/Long Look pageant.

The queen will receive $2k and other prizes. The First runner up will get $1k plus other prizes and third place person will receive $500 and other gifts. All the participants will be enjoying a number of treats and gifts.

Tough Crowd

Last night’s crowd was one that can be described as very selfish and not very encouraging to those who they were not rooting for. That was especially in the case of contestant #3 Miss Shona Rogers.

This was something that could not have gone un-noticed and was very painful to some who knew what great courage it takes to get up on the stage and represent the way those girls did last night.

Miss Rogers, according to one person in the crowd, deserves a special prize for her great courage. “She had almost no crowd support, not because she was doing a bad job, she did very well but the other girls had their rooters there and it was a sad case that she had just a handful of persons to cheer her on and their voices were drowned out in the auditorium,” said the observer.

Miss Rogers crackled just a bit in her introduction as a consequence of being affected by the hecklers. She did a talent piece that carried a strong message, her Black and White pieces were very realistic and modern and so was her evening wear. When it came to the intelligence segment she was forced to pause a bit again because of hecklers but according to observers her response to her question was on point.

Another person in speaking to Virgin Islands News Online following the show took the time to send a message to all the contestants especially those who did not place.

“You are all queens, you did very well and that’s without question. Prove to be real queens by doing the things you stood up on that stage and represented a prospective lawyer and all the other things. You can and must follow those dreams because for a few of us in the crowd you are true queens, live your dreams and be the best you can be. You showed a high level of strength by taking that stage with poise, grace and intelligence something the hecklers cannot do.”

A 23 year old is Miss BVI Jr. Given that any young lady 18 and older can run for Miss BVI. You would thinks Jr Miss would be for contestents under 18 years.

Sounds like a way for BVIFFC to take money off of people. What a racket.

I totally agree with you. Not that I am against any of the contestants.. Congrats to the young lady that won, however she is qualified to run for Ms. BVI. She is of that age. Ms 'JR' BVI should be for those that are under 18. Might as well you left it as Ms EE/LL.

Yes she is 23 however the criteria for the show needs to be revisited because the age limit is 18-26 which is similar to miss BVI however this young lady ran and won it hands down! Consistent, poised and confident!!! Congrats to her!

@Interesting I thought of the same thing as it should have been called Miss Teen BVI and the age group as you said should have been under 18 yrs. So is she gonna represent us at the Caribbean Talented Teen in SKB or Ms World/Miss Universe/Miss Earth? Logics

Why is this show call "Ms. Jr BVI" when there is another queen show called "Ms.Teen BVI" (reigning Queen is Ms.Kamyce Penn.) Ms Jr Bvi and Ms teen bvi technically mean the same thing. Why has the show been renamed from "Ms.East End/Long Look" ??

On the other hand, The contestants for Ms "Jr" BVI should Atleast be between ages 16-19.. Why is it Ms. Jr Bvi is 23 years and a contestant In Ms Bvi is age 18 years?

I am very sorry woody but giving up is just not in my DNA. I am proud of my self as well as my fellow contestants as we did what many won't even dare to do. I will always be a pageant girl as it is something I am passionate about. Unlike you those who know me well continue support me simply because I am doing what I love regardless of all the noise. - Sylvanna Charles

You go girl, tell them like it is to persons like woody, haters like them don't have the knowledge, talent, skills or guts to be in a show or maybe to dam ugly like goat. Do what makes you happy, I'm so proud of you to stand up for your rights with such grace, and that sounds like the behavior of a queen. Go Sylvanna Charles.

I think credit should be given where it is due and the judges should stop been influenced by the crowd's responces in giving the girls their rightfully earned points Also... pageants should not be judged by friends and family of the contestants in any way. All of the girls did extremely well especially shona Rogers and Ronique McMillian very proud of them but once again in the BVI it's once again about who you know and who know you.

These girls were robbed of their prizes in last night show and that is just mean.

it seem like you wasn't to this show that show was judged fairly i was very disappointed in ms. rogers performance and her choices of clothes i really thought she would of been one of the top contenders as for ms. mcmillian she did well i will give her that but with queen show's abroad the focus is always the fit of the clothes aswell as body type i dont think the judge was influenced by the crowd and if they were the winner would of been ms. mcmillian and not miss penn

sweetie i was at the show and you sound like one of the ignorant .......... who was causing a disturbance. Its great that she won hoot hoot but Ms. Penn did not deserve those segments of swimwear, black & white, evening wear which was obvious to everyone... even the girls but easily blind sighted by her rooters. If Ronique had won it would of been great and at least fair and Ms. Rogers did a great job.

Give other people a chance,Its not a matter of not liking you. We adore you but you have to realize Its not every time you want to go to a queen show and see the same person participating. Do you eat panchee every night? No right welll...

I do wish bloggers would do more research before just stating their own personal opinions. Every young girl in the territory has the same opportunity to run in shows as I do, so this has nothing to do with giving others a chance. I have put in time, energy and money since prince and princess 2005 to get to where I am today. I am not just a thick girl parading on stage, but I would like you to know that I come up with ALL MY material, routines and write MY OWN speeches. You raised a point about not wanting to see the same persons run in every show but my question to you is...do athletes stop competing or do they continue to their training to defend their records? Do bands stop creating hit songs or do they return year after year to defend their road march champion title? The same rule applies for soca monarch! calypso monarch! sports! and even pageantry! Like I said before and I will say it again, most of you commenting on the blogs wouldn't even dare to run for a show....this is why the BVI will never move forward because we tear each other down instead of encouraging and supporting one another! #SadButTrue! - Sylvanna Charles

My comment is geared toward the committee...we would like to know how congeniality wss judged if none of the contestants weregiven the oppopportunity to choose. N that in itself sounds fisjy to many of us. When we contacted the committee members at least the ones who we thought were on the committee...they were illit. We contacted the head of the committe who said three of them chose ....herself and two others. We called one she said she had no knowledge of the choice. The other whom she said was on the committee wasnt. And as a matter of fact we had never seen her by or near us. The one whom we also thoughtwas on the committee, namely the two tha taught the dance...thd head claim they were not a part of the committee. We were like what....we intend to b heard and given answers....something smells fishy. We feel we were robbed.
