This Week We Feature Young Professional Kerry J. Thomas
Virgin Islands News Online is proud to present this week’s young professional, businessman Kerry J. Thomas, who is a true definition of a young genius in his own rights.
Thomas of East End/Long Look, is the owner of Platinum Trucking and Water Delivery, a company born out of his love for trucks and his drive for wanting his own business.
“As a kid I always loved trucks. My first job I landed after graduating from high school was working at Deloitte and Touché as a junior accountant. After that I worked at BVI government in the Treasury Department for a short period. That was the last time I ever worked in an office. I realized my passion and immediately pursue it by driving trucks for a living. Thereafter, I purchased my very own truck and it started from there.”
For Kerry, the challenge for him when he started his business 12 years ago, was the fact that he was young and there were many experienced people already in the business, however, while he admitted that he wanted to give up, he never did. “I stuck it through and persevere. I didn't give up!”
Asked to describe himself, this Virgin Islander businessman said he works hard and sometimes he is misunderstood by his language, but for the most part he is a cool individual.
This is one young man who enjoys challenges and situations that are encountered while driving trucks. He admitted though that every job he does tend to be different which requires different skills set.
In a business that is somewhat saturated in the Virgin Islands, Kerry said what makes his business different from others is being his own boss which motivates him to always work to the best of his ability and provide prompt and excellent service at all times.
Even though his job can be very hectic at times, in the trucking business there are slow days and busy days which allows him to balance his time. When not working, Kerry enjoys playing basketball, domino, going to the gym and sailing.
The former student of the now Elmore Stoutt High School, who graduated in 1992, feels his business has excelled beyond his goals and expectations, but also believes there is always room for growth. “However, as a hard worker my ultimate goal is to retire young and travel the world.”
This young professional, who looks up to Almighty God for inspiration, is the son of Arlene and Cedric Thomas.
His advice to young people who may want to get into business is to have confidence in themselves and persevere.
“The advice I would like to give to young people is that at times it will get rough and feel like you would want to give up but have confidence in yourself. Owning your own business is not easy, but if you stay focus, head strong and knowing that success wouldn't happen overnight, throughout all you will persevere. Always remember what you put in, is what you get out.”
Kerry’s company, Platinum Trucking and Water Delivery is located in East End Tortola and provides water delivery and dumping services. He can be reached at 1-284-499-2061 or 1-284-541-2061.
