ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- “The public has put this government in place to make decisions that are in their best interest. There are a lot of tough decisions to make especially in these challenging times.

“This Government is not afraid to make them because taking care of the people is not about popularity. It is about the long-term prosperity of these islands and fulfilling purpose through our actions when these projects are finished...”

These were the firm words of Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) at the Virgin Islands Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) Contracts Signing for Little Dix Hill, Slope Stabilisation and Road Rehabilitation Works; Bob’s Gas Station, Slope Stabilisation and Road Rehabilitation Works and Repairs to the Vanterpool Administration Building on Thursday, October 15, 2020.

“Our greatest asset is our people’- Premier

The Government has been moving full speed ahead with various infrastructural projects while passing several legislations to bring new revenue to the Territory. Additionally, it has been pushing for Virgin Islanders to occupy high level positions in the public service as well as for contractors to also get fair opportunities for projects.

While many have praised the Government for their foresight and action, some have found ways to criticise, including calling the Government a 'dictatorship'.

But, according to the Premier, his Government will continue to forge ahead with its agenda.

“Our greatest asset is our people and we have to build our people. This is your Government working for you the people.

“When all of this is finished and is said and done we would have ensured that we strengthened the capacity of our people, increased the capacity of our people and strengthen and increased the capacity of our contractors as they not only work in the BVI, but anywhere in the world.”

Fair opportunities for local contractors

Premier Fahie emphasised that all projects were tendered and awarded through a transparent and accountable process; however, to ensure that the local contractors are the ones who will be given the opportunity to bid on these projects, that was the work of Government.

“So we cannot guarantee if you are a contractor in District Nine that you will get the work in District Nine, but what we guaranteed with the CDB loan fund is that once you are a BVI company that you will be the one to get the opportunity to do the work. For that I thank my colleagues for their support in this endeavor because we the people of the Virgin Islands must benefit from the economic boost from these projects.”

‘Trend must continue in private & public sectors’

The Premier remarked that this same trend must continue even in job opportunities in the public sector and private sector.

“We know that we will need some help from the outside to help build our Territory, but we cannot build the Territory without its people and that is the mantra of this Government. We will do it together, on the road towards being more self –reliance.”

Projects & Contractors

Meanwhile, the contract for the Little Dix Hill slope stabilisation and road rehabilitation works project was awarded to Caribbean Environmental Restoration Ltd to the tune of $407,105.60.

“Safe roads are our number one of our main priories as a Government, and we look forward to the demolition of the existing section of asphalt, construction and reinforced concrete pavement, and installation of guard rails,” Premier Fahie commented.

The contract for the stabilisation and road rehabilitation works of the Bob’s Gas Station slope was also awarded to the Caribbean Environmental Restoration Ltd to the tune of $494,308.10.

The contract for repairs to the Vanterpool Administration Building on Virgin Gorda was awarded to Metro Construction Limited in the amount of $1,410,670.79.

Premier Fahie said he is looking forward to the completion of this project so that public officers can work and provide their valuable customers with a safe place to do business.

He said the project calls for the rehabilitation of the three-story administration building.

“I look forward to seeing the rehabilitation works moving forward swiftly where the contractor will ensure the redesign and new office location for the DMV office, improve security elements in the main lobby, improvements to the inland revenue office, refurbishment of the Immigration Department and the Labour Department office space, reconfigure the Passport Office space, repairs to damages to the interior and exterior walls, ceilings, et cetera, and installation of hurricane shutters and refurbish restrooms.”

I appreciate the fact that you speak about taking care of the people. But does the people you speak about include All Peoples? I was born in Long Look, and lived here all my life. Over the past 10 years what economic or social, or environmental development has you seen in the Long Look community Mr. Premier? Dr. Pickering built a gazebo, was that supposed to make the residents over the top happy? Murders took place there, drug use and now another one of the multiple uses are homeless living there. Mr. Premier what plans does the VIP Government have to put light in the Long Look community? Right now my community is a dead and dark place, but you are touting that your government was put there to make decisions to help the people? Yes, we see multi-million dollar contracts being signed every day, but whose table are being fed? Not mine, or the majority of the people that make up the population of this territory. Long Look community does not appear to be one of you and your government many priorities. Mr. Wheatley, I pray that you will take your responsibility seriously about representing the district you were elected to serve. It's just a lot of feet dragging when it comes to the Long Look community. I and many others will like to see some action towards making the Long Look community the vibrant community that it has the potential to be.

Thank You Mr. Premier, we need a construction boom and foreign investment encouragement to develop our ppl. More hotels, resorts, commercial buildings for financial services, road development and education in Tourism and financial sector, encouraging lending institutions. Keep pushing that agenda.

Yes, Hon. Premier Andrew Fahie, but why is not helping more poor people in this country earn a better living be amoug the tough decisions? And why are only the special hand pick few keep getting the high paying positions? And why are their so few community meetings arrange for face to face public inputs on important issues before passage? Good leadership is kwown by its practical caring for, sharing with, and helping to carry the heavy heavy burdens and to others, especially to those that are the weakest. Only to such God grant His approval.

Taking care of people mean everything: Political opponent, indigenous BVIslanders, belongers, residents and work permit holders . I am tired of reading the shallow mentality of what it means to live and exist in a multicultural society. Throwing sections of people under the bus is not taking care of all people in the society

There are no indigenous belongers in the BVI - the belongerA and/or British Virgin Islanders are not indigenous - the Caribs and arawaks were indigenous to the region although not to the BVI in particular. Let’s stop with this indigenous nonsense please.

I am sure that everyone that is living in the BVI regardless of where they are from love their country and their preference is to live and exist in their own country. Most people leave their country to seek a better life. With the intention to improve themselves and one day return to their homeland. Now would it is not fair to put preasure on the VI government in a small community like this to provide for every nationality that resides in the VI. When we are constantly reminded that the VI have no resources in comparrison to Where they are from. These other countries with all their resources cannot provide jobs and a better living for their people but poor VI with no resources must do it. Remember now it is claimed by some that the VI people cannot read, cannot count and connot do literally anything. However, they have built a community where people from diverse cultures can come and exist better than how they can in their own country. Peace and love to all mankind.

Hon. Premier Andrew Fahie, I am Know that you and your fellow Minister are under severe preasure to deliver on the promises that were made to them since elected dated 25/2/2019. You were truly handed to lead a country that economy was badly weakened by 2017 huricane Erma, and further weakened by Covid-19. One of the negative hindrances that I am aware is the lack of unity, and unfair sharing of goods (jobs etc) among us. Shortly after Erma caused vast Destruction to our country's economy. After then, we were forced to take emergency actions to survided its devastating empact on us. We had to allowed many skilful to come, and they came and helped. But it is not hard to see, and even realised, that of the 100% of persons that are imployed since Erma, aproximately 68-73% are not natives or having natives connection. The disparity persent gap is too large. We need much more than tough talk. We need Jobs to earn more MONEY. In Basket Ball as the saying goes,"The ball is in your court" The click is counting down. It is time to score or...

A lot of trickery is going on. We cant rest in our house for loud music and noise but the owners home in their houses resting. This has to stop no need calling police waste of time.they can be else where trying to help others. If you want to take care of the people put your foot down and let us see a difference. Forget about votes and remember the stress and the pressure these bars putting us through in our communities..

Dear Hon. Premier Andrew Fahie, you are quite right that our people is our greatest assets, but be it so why then are some the assets (some people) underpaid and other assets (some people) so vastly overpaid for semilar survice? And why the employers (the voters) that employed you and the other ministers not allowed to examine the contractial contents, to verify that we can expect value for dollars? We well know that the issue of value for dollars is the highest concern that voters have with any elected Government. Isn't it? Especially in a money chunching time as this, every dollar counts. Would you agree? Most of the voters will agree with me. Please don't forget that "we are yet out of the woods." Agree? Thank you.
