Subsidise young men, not glorified parties – Wheatley
He was at the time speaking at a community meeting held on May 8, 2012 at the East End Community Centre.
Mr. Wheatley is worried that there are too many young men on the streets “right now” and called for some community action to take some responsibility for them since he believes relying solely on the parents is not the best option.
Against this backdrop, he is calling on Government to inject funds that its gives to glorified parties to the development of the young generation.
“Government subsidised Music Fest with $150,000 in which it says it benefits the entire BVI, but the reality is Music Fest is a business and I think some of that money that is used in my opinion as a glorified party should be invested in programmes because I know the Government is struggling with money right now...Let us prioritise invest that money in [youth] programmes,” he suggested to elected Government officials, who were at the meeting.
Mr. Wheatley emphasised that it would go a long way if potential entrepreneurs could go to banks knowing they have the financial backing of Government, and pointed out that “Music Fest don’t go to the bank”.
And while he supports the Education and Culture Minister, Hon. Myron Walwyn’s vision of having more rehabilitative programmes in the prison, the East End resident stated that it would be “nice if there were programmes before they go to prison”.
