Subsidise young men, not glorified parties – Wheatley

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Instead of Government subsiding glorified parties such as Music Fest, that money could be used to assist young people to jumpstart small businesses in the community, opined East End resident and talk show host Natalio Wheatley.

He was at the time speaking at a community meeting held on May 8, 2012 at the East End Community Centre.

Mr. Wheatley is worried that there are too many young men on the streets “right now” and called for some community action to take some responsibility for them since he believes relying solely on the parents is not the best option.

Against this backdrop, he is calling on Government to inject funds that its gives to glorified parties to the development of the young generation.

“Government subsidised Music Fest with $150,000 in which it says it benefits the entire BVI, but the reality is Music Fest is a business and I think some of that money that is used in my opinion as a glorified party should be invested in programmes because I know the Government is struggling with money right now...Let us prioritise invest that money in [youth] programmes,” he suggested to elected Government officials, who were at the meeting.

Mr. Wheatley emphasised that it would go a long way if potential entrepreneurs could go to banks knowing they have the financial backing of Government, and pointed out that “Music Fest don’t go to the bank”.

And while he supports the Education and Culture Minister, Hon. Myron Walwyn’s vision of having more rehabilitative programmes in the prison, the East End resident stated that it would be “nice if there were programmes before they go to prison”.

I'm not bashing the government but when an important point is being made, it must not left to be taken and driven with the wind. It is important that government establish some form of financial assistance(NOW) for future business men and women(British Virgin Islanders). Indeed, the banks does not lend money unless one has money and the future of the territory lies in the minds of our youths who possess visionary leadership.

It is a glorified party that brings money INTO the country! He sound foolish! Just talking because he have a mouthpiece. And to the people that don't support the event, then that is fine, because the event is about tourists coming in, not you going out to party. It also gives local artists a chance to exhibit their art. $150k and thats all? When by monday every bar owner and restaurant on the beach done sell off. When every villa and hotel in the Bay done full up? Boss hush yo mouth! That is one of the best investments yet! Stevie Wonder could see that the Music Festival brings waaaay more than $150k into the economy. He need to hush he backside and look at the big picture. How the government gon get money to put in their budget every year if not for Tourism? they need the same tourism dollars to be able to pay salaries, and build the hospital and pave the roads and cut bush! It comes from Tourism and the Fest brings in tourists. These tourists have to eat, sleep, drink and be entertained. The ferry boats have to be paid. Departure taxes alone during that weekend will be almost $100k! Sowande you too darned smart for your own good. A bunch of book sense but no common sense.

Do you really believe that? For that to be true, Musicfest would have to bring (on average) 1,000 people into BVI *who would not otherwise visit* and then they must spend *on average* US$150 each. I don't know about you, but the only times I have been to Musicfest, it seems that all the people there live on Tortola anyhow. So the amount of money brought *into* the economy is pretty close to zero. On the other hand, all the money paid to high priced stars is definitely money which goes *out of* the economy.

The man is talking sense and you are hyping up an event that is long dead. How will you make 100,000 on departure tax? The man is an instructor at the college you know 100,000 dollars divided by $5.00 = 20,000 people GET REAL!!! The ferry boats all four of them only carry 150 persons max. 100,000 divided by 150 seat ferry gives you the magic number that represent skelton Lodge group 666,666.666 Eat That

ferries do a number of trip boss!!! so ur calculatons are inaccurate! think more in the sense of 1 trip you wrote about, however many ppl will be coming in a day or 2 in advance leading up to the show, plus the ferries will be making multiple trips per day all 4 ferries! simple math....u forgot all this to add up.....thats $100,000 easy! not even counting folks from VG?? and the additional increase of sailers picking up mooring balls at CGB.

"Departure taxes alone during that weekend will be almost $100k! " I trust math isn't your strong point.

Don't be dumb. The poster was trying to make a point. The event easily brings in more money than what it cost.Departure Tax is $20 at beef island and $5 at the ferry. If only 500 people come in through beef and spend $50 (taxi roundtrip), $700 (hotel), $60 (Musicfest tickets), $200 (food and drink), $40 (gifts items) that equals over $500,000.00!!! I haven't even added up the 1,000 plus people that will come from the USVI. That is $50 in roundtrip ferry each which equals $50,000 alone! Plus another $60,000 alone going to local ferries! Plus $200 in vehicle rentals if 4 people shared one rental equals another $50,000! For a total of $160,000.00! I did not overstate any of the figures! Those are very conservative numbers. In past reports, they said over 4,000 people went to the MusicFest. DPU statistics in 2009 showed over 2,000 people paying departure tax immediately after the event. People, not because Wheatley sounded like he was making sense, means he really was! Use you own heads and get the facts! Simple math show at least $685,000.00 coming into the country immediately as a result of the event with the government giving just $150,000.00! And that is only the direct revenue, there is still the trickle effect that increase that figure 2 to 3 times over! I agree with the blogger....shut up with the hot air Natalio!

hahahah well if thats the sentiment we should ban festival and all the other festival, Long Bush, east, VG all casue dem say we wasting the money, lets keep the country with no social activity and put up a bunch of community house for the youth...lets see how the moral and social fabric of the place will end up! As dem say alot of book sense but its not all about books young man, you have to strike a balance with everything we do...tourism and "glorified parties" must have their time.....its all about BALANCE!!

Ezekiel 25:17. "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you!

Sounds like a hater! As a brother to that man, I know for a fact you can't question what Rodney does for the youth (youths is not a word). Special Olympics, Christmas gifts for poor, clean the park, paint red cross and he was a mentor for the vocational school. That's just the lil bit I know for sure. Stop being a hater. Y r we so negative and hateful in this country? Every comment on every story is just negative all the time. What are you doing for the youth? What are you doing to help the economy? What are you doing to stop the crime? Look in the mirror before trying to bring down the positive things other man doing!
