VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI- It has long been reported on Virgin Gorda that aggressive stray dogs pose a danger to persons, especially children.

With the current COVID-19 lockdown; however, the concern has shifted to farm animals.

According to reports reaching our newsroom, a pack of stray dogs has been killing goats and other animals on the Sister Island and one farmer reported retaliated by “shooting” at the dogs.

It is unclear what was used to “shoot” at the stray animals.

According to a resident of VG, who asked not to be named, “I concern that he shooting the dogs and I have concerns that the dogs killing his goats,” the man said on April 15, 2020.

“We need help in getting rid of stray killer dogs. We need to look into it like we looking into coronavirus,” the concerned man added.

RVIPF investigating

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is said to be investigating the incident of stray dogs killing animals belonging to a local farmer on Virgin Gorda.

According to persons close to the matter, ranks of the RVIPF visited a home were the said dogs were present; however, persons at the said residence denied ownership of the dogs, stating the animals are strays but they usually feed them.

“I would have rather know that the police didn’t just walk away from that scene but contact the relevant people to take the dogs away or put them down because they are not dogs to play around, they are fierce and deadly.

“Today they attacking goats, tomorrow it may be the owner of the goats and that is not going to be pretty. Like many people on lock-down they [dogs] hungry too and they will go into defence mode at some point,” the man argued.

I agree the dogs need to be dealt with, but the same one who killing the dogs need to take responsibility for when his goats destroy people's crops and plants. That's my two cents.

@ Hmmmmmmmm. I agree with you and also the cows running rampant in Tortola destroying all of our crops, breaking water pipes and putting their heads down to butt us for chasing them out. The owners of ALL animals should be held accountable for their animals, who should be penned up. Sick of this for Donkey years.

It is unfair for farmers who have their animals penned up especially during this quarantine to have to go and find their animals malled by dogs. Yes some people are careless and do not tie their Cows, goats or sheep. But as a responsible farmer who only can go out between 6 - 12..it is very hard. Something needs to be done on both sides

When government starts an aggressive impound policy I bet the issue with strays would be promptly addressed by animal owners. I can remember stray animals walking the streets as a child, and 50 years later no change..Impound the wild sheep, goats and cows, and when left unclaimed use the meat at the hospital or old folks home or anywhere that it is needed.
