ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- While it happened without a whisper, the Labour Department of the Government of the Virgin Islands has a new Deputy Labour Commissioner.

Following the resignation of Virgin Gordian Mrs Stephanie I. Faulkner-Williams in June of 2014 Mrs Michelle A. McLean has been appointed Deputy Labour Commissioner, effective November of 2014, according to this news site’s sources in the senior management of the public bureaucracy.

Mrs Faulkner-Williams resigns

It was in 2010 that Government announced the appointment of Mrs Faulkner-Williams whose tenure as Deputy Labour Commissioner with the Department of Labour became effective on April 4 of the same year.

According to this news site’s research, she holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and International Development Studies and a Master’s Certificate in Human Resources Management from the St Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

However, in June of 2014 Mrs Faulkner-Williams called it quits via her resignation from the post to which she had been confirmed. It remains unclear if she became another casualty of the National Democratic Party’s political victimisation against locals.

Mrs McLean in & confirmed

Meanwhile, Mrs Michelle A. McLean - a Virgin Islander and long time civil servant who has worked for years in the Training Division and the court system of the Government- has been appointed to and confirmed in the post as Deputy Labour Commissioner effective November of 2014, according to the same sources.

As Deputy Labour Commissioner, Mrs McLean is responsible for managing the daily operations of each unit within the department; recruiting and screening applicants to fill vacancies; conferring with unit officers on matters such as placement problems, retention or release of probationary employees, dismissals of Virgin Islanders, and work permit issues; participating in overall planning and policy making to provide effective and uniformed services to internal and external customers; and coordinating annual outreach programmes to aid in the recruitment of school-leavers.

Mrs McLean holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Management and a Master's Degree in Human Resources Management.

It remains unclear why there has been no announcement to this appointment from the Government Information Services (GIS) to such a senior level appointment that is a vital Department to the economical development of the Virgin Islands.

The Labour Department made news in 2014 after it was revealed that in 2013 alone, to which statistics were available, some 10,000 work permits were processed while locals, especially the youth, remained unemployed.

The Deputy Labour Commissioner’s post is a government job in grade 14 with a salary range of $47, 371-$75, 282 a year.

If a local is being replaced by another local what is the issue? They supposed to live and die in their position? Stop being so petty.

Victim of the NDP victimization when it comes to local but then goes on to say that she is a local and has been confirmed? Further, if Faulkner resigned how can she be a victim of anything? Wow.

She is a humble down to earth woman who is easy to talk to. In my earlier years in Government, I attended several workshops; customer service, telephone techniques and records management where she was one of the facilitators and she did an excellent job. Politics and everything else aside, I think she is a good person to fill this position.

The truth is Stephanie resigned and that is all, she was not forced out, she is quite happier, sad to see her leave. She is the most versed person in the labour department especially with the labour code, and she was not promoted, then came Mrs. R,. Whats so funny about this that Mrs. McClean was the Employment Serv. manager and now deputy, long time friend of Mrs. R. so what you think happened, but I hope Mclean up for it, good luck

Why should she have to go? She is an intelligent lady who works tirelessly in a thankless job. Not one of you can fill her shoes. Continue the good work Mrs. Rymer.

Stephanie was a good worker, a good lady, wanting to do the right things, stood up to big business. But when the head and the body isn`t in sink, most time the head wins. She was pushing justice for employees, pushing the pension plan for employees, she pushed the wrong company, so she got pushed out instead, sacrificed. Keep your head high Steph.

I am confident that the loss of Mrs Faulkner-Williams to the civil service was a huge one. I liaised with her on numerous occasions and have always found her to be kind, compassionate, level headed and exceptionally knowledgeable on employee/employer relations and labour matters. She was always willing to share her expertise with others.

No doubt she has already proven to be an outstanding asset to her current employer. I wish her all the best in her future endeavours.

Mrs. Mclean, please look into the lady who they fired from Chef Pantry Leverick Bay case, she did nothing wrong but speak her mind, send her back to work, let them keep their money, we are not for sale, make me a believer in you, I was a believer in Mrs. Faulkner. So long labour told them to pay the lady for her 13 years and they refused. who the hell they think they are. Let them know they don`t run things in this country. Send her back to work, pls. thks
