ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A soon to be father, who allegedly supplied cannabis to others to help generate revenue to offset his expenses, will spend the next 12 months in prison.

Bevinton Linton was sentenced on May 24, 2012 when he appeared before Magistrate Tamia Richards. He had pleaded guilty to being in possession of an unlawful substance with the intent to supply.

According to court records, Police was patrolling the Huntums Ghut area on March 14, 2012 a little after 10:30 p.m. when they saw Linton and a few other male persons talking but begun to act suspiciously.

The court heard that the unemployed man had a black bag in his possession, and as the officers approached him, he began running and allegedly threw the bag into the bushes. He was subsequently arrested and when the bag was retrieved 158 dime bags containing vegetable matter were found.

The cannabis weighed 260 grammes with a street value of $2,060.

However, prior to his sentence, Linton told the court that his girlfriend was expecting his child in June and he needed the money to “clear up some bills”.

Linton was unrepresented.

A year for cannabis that weighed 260 grammes with a street value of $2,060..this is another case of clear injustice.

The so called family laws in the BVI is another one of the pillars of a system that just isn't working...who will address it???

One of the more visible issues challenging father's rights is that most men who are behind on child support are not unwilling to pay; they are unable to pay. And yet BVI legal system continue to jail fathers for their inability to pay....now this is a case that has an element of both!!
