ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Noting that government had to take urgent measures to counteract the WhatsApp rumours about the presence of the Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in the territory, Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) says false information continues to spread faster than facts in the Virgin Islands.

Using the Opportunity to reiterate his Government's Computer Misuse and Cyber Crime (Amendment) Act of 2019 as necessary, the Premier says there is a possibility that the false messages and its content could destabilise the country economically and socially.

WhatsApp Rumours

"Every morning you wake up in this country you get four or five WhatsApp telling you all sorts of things, long on rumours short on facts. So we wanted to make sure that the whole diaspora of what we have been doing comes from all the officials," Hon Fahie noted at a press conference yesterday, Thursday, February 27, 2020.

He said the WhatsApp itself, was not the reason for the reaction, rather the dangerous content of messages that the government had to counteract and provide credible information.

"It's difficult to ever contain anything in the world now, because in one WhatsApp post, or one Facebook post saying whatever... whether it turns out to be factual or not, in the time that it is released can create havoc," Premier Fahie illustrated.

More Warnings

The Premier warned that people stop spreading false information and messages without facts and said that someone would be made an example soon.

Whilst unpopular amongst media watchdogs, section 14A of the Cybercrime act proposes criminalisation of anyone using a computer to send “grossly offensive” or “menacing” messages “for the purpose of causing annoyance or inconvenience.”

The fines for that offence can reach as high as $500,000 and jail terms of up to 14 years.

Mr. Premier, first I would like to say, I sometimes is a critic of yours but, I am backing you on this 100%. Someone has to and should pay and be held accountable. Stand firm Mr. Premier.

First let me state, I don't agree that the person should have leaked the information.

Secondly, I also feel we need to start being proactive rather than reactive. We need not be acting like China, see how that is working out. From the information that is circulating, Government knew who the person is and what country they were travelling from. For their loved ones sake and for everyone else safety they should have been placed in quarantine, no one would have know unless Government themselves have a leak.

Things done in secret always appears to be illegal or someone hiding something. We need to get our act together and consider the well-being of everyone. You have a right to be safe just as much as I.

A mole inside the Government and BVIHSA.

Well thank you MOLE for exposing this to the public. FYI, the mole is always 2 steps ahead. No joke, there is a mole in Government and BVIHSA. The Premier is paranoid because they try to cover this up. Then try to blame WhatsApp for posting the truth.

The person should be in Quarantine. You all see the reports coming out of China. This is nothing to play with. Tortola is in no way ready or equipt to handle a outbreak of Corona Virus. America have the CDC, what agency do we have to protect us.

At no time did I hear in the Voice note the person saying confirm case he clearly said suspected case and was letting ya know to protect ourselves
It’s the same way China hid it and didn’t want it out Hence the reason it ended up spreading soo rapidly

I can understand the Sharing of the photo of the suspected case

But something like we all need to be made aware of

If there’s a suspected case we need to know

This is not the moment for critics. Spreading of fake news must be punished. This should not be matter of discussion.

      There was no fake news.
The info posted by the whistleblower said precisely what the Premier belatedly was forced to announce.....That, someone on the BVi displayed symptoms consistent with the Corona virus and had been quarantined.

My personal thank you to the person who saw something, knew something and was caring enough to publicly post,on their own accord, the informative truth that someone in the territory displayed signs of the ensuing pandemic ,and was quarantined. That confirmation of the illness remained pending the lab results.
As a result, the Gov has claimed to have sprung into reflex mode with overdue concern and long overdue safeguards. Supposedly.

Who leaked the information? The health minister must investigate his team at the BVIHSA. And, just a reminder; We all know that nothing is confidential in this place. So, why is everyone acting soooo surprise?

While this virus is serious it does not give anyone the right to cause panic in the territory. Protocol still has its rightful place it's the role of the ministry of health to advise and update the territory of what's happening. When one takes it upon themselves and spread bad news with out the facts it affect the entire territory and the persons who it directly affects. We dont have the facts please let's stop speculating and profiling people it's wrong. How would you feel if someone did that to you?. Ill say it again Wait for the facts and stop creating panic.

Under our present Criminal Code, there is a charge of creating fear and alarm. This person was reckless is broadcasting that message via WhatsApp and should be made to pay. I agreed with the Hon. Premier that’s this recklessness can have negative effects on the territory economically and socially. This should not go unnoticed

You wrote, " Its the role of the ministry of health to advise and update"...Well they didn' t. This was an urgent situation. Lives placed in danger. Allowing the patient to remain in the unsuspecting general population along with relatives and friends that were exposed and going about their everyday routines, jobs etc, is criminal behaviour, and very serious, in my estimation. The individual who " leaked " the info was a good Samaritan should be lauded not rhreatened and bullied.

Had China listened to young the Dr. Who is now dead, they virus would not have spread as much as it did. China also initially charge several doctors with spreading fear when in the end the Doctors were correct and guess where rhenintially published? ON SOCAIL MEDIA. YOU CAN KEEP THE OUBLIC IN THE DARK WHILE PROTECTING YOUR IMMEDIATE FAMILY.

Please let's be real, it could of been anybody who leaked this information and I'm happy they did, could of been the same person (patient) confide in a family or friend and they told someone else hoping it would be kept a secret, could of been someone from BVIHS who knows. If it's for our safety i see no problem if it's cyber bullying then i understand or even videos with people being hurt i understand because now i see people take videos instead of helping people and trying to expose the victims when they are in vulnerable positions which is horrible.

Maybe in Leu of the Authorities addressing this earlier.. Someone take it up on their own to address it in their own way by warning via a voice note.. The Authorities have to blame themselves for been put in a reactive mode. ... They had the info and time enough to address it inform the nation as " We are doing some checks on a person who spent time in so so country just as a safety measure" Maybe thAt popular voice note that is all over the world would not have come about...The Authorities fell asleep on the Job.. The voice note I agree with the Premier can cause negative effects on the country. The question is.. is the voice note a lie or not?
