‘Some present MPs not qualified to be in the HOA!’ – Edmund G. Maduro
He was speaking on his talk show, the EGM Show, heard on ZROD 103.7 FM last evening August 20, 2015.
Maduro said that, according to the Constitution, the person running for elected office in the Virgin Islands must be a Virgin Islander by birth or descent who has a father or mother who at the time of the birth was a British overseas territory citizen by virtue of birth in the Virgin Islands or by virtue of descent of a father or mother who was born in the Virgin Islands or who belonged to the territory.
He said the Constitution also makes allowances for someone born outside of the territory to parents who were born or who belonged to the Virgin Islands by descent and who have a grandparent who was born in the Virgin Islands.
“But we have people in this Government who do not belong to the British Virgin Islands by birth or descent. The same people have neither a grandmother nor a grandfather born here,” said Maduro.
“Ladies and gentlemen, where are we going? Where is the leadership? What is happening? And people are talking about it but they are afraid to open their mouths. It is an issue that is of great concern and an issue that we have to take up and deal with,” he said.
Maduro did not call any names in his accusations. “We better be careful ladies and gentlemen. I am reading the Constitution which cannot be overruled by any other law,” he said.
Maduro also referred to sections of the Constitution that state through which persons could be disqualified from the House of Assembly, such as in cases of elections offences.
“There has been a lot of bribery going on here. That is a serious offence. The Police know about it. Other law enforcement officers know about it. Those offences are serious enough to disqualify any member from membership of the House of Assembly,” he said.
Bribery & Obeah!
Mr Maduro had also made some highly controversial statements while speaking on his EGM radio show broadcast on June 25, 2015 on ZROD 103.7FM when he said the June 8, 2015 general elections in the Virgin Islands were riddled with bribery and Obeah.
“We just had a snap general elections following many issues of political corruption. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were used by political parties to bribe citizens to vote for them,” he alleged. The National Democratic Party won in a landslide which was a surprise to many people given the abuses and issues of governance and transparency that marred their last term.
“There were claims that Obeah played a high part in this last general elections and that Obeah was even used to control the voting,” said Maduro. “If this behaviour different from the days when the Jews worshipped Baal?” he had asked.
He said that even though some people go to church and pretend to be worshippers of Jehovah God, “We are very satanic.”
“These are things that will not improve the quality of life of our children and we have to begin to deal with that.”
Maduro had asked whether there was a man of God in the VI to lead the people back to God. “Even our elections now is governed and controlled by Obeah,” he lamented.
The have been numerous reports of political parties handing out envelopes of cash and providing household items as an inducement for persons to vote for them during the June 8, 2015 elections.

"(a) was so qualified immediately before the commencement of this Constitution; or"
Essentially if the three persons who Mr. Maduro is making reference to were so qualified in accordance with the old provision in the previous Constitution then they are also presently qualified under the new order, not withstanding the new rules.
If they were born after the new Constitution order was enacted then they would not be qualified.
I hear .......... but he does not pay social security for his workers; laws are laws...
Put your money where your mouth is and get on with it. Otherwise stop flogging a dead horse!
I understand the issue; but the united kingdom's representative swore in these guys: there is also a legal nomination process in place; it took maduro 4-years to come up with this::: this sound like some one pulling his strings(VIP) we just love to find some issue when it comes to our own race!!!! we have far more serious matters in this territory to fix( these guys been holding political office from 2011)...
