ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Senior Magistrate Tamia N. Richards today, Wednesday, March 7, 2018 sentenced Selvin Chinnery, 47, to 5 years in relation to unlawful possession of firearm and possession of 3 rounds of ammunition.

Mr Chinnery, was also sentenced to 3 years in prison for a charge of unlawful possession of explosives.

The sentences will run concurrently.

Background

The court heard that on April 16, 2016, officers of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) received information that led them to conduct a search of his home in Jost van Dyke.

The search revealed a .22 pistol firearm along with 3 rounds of ammunition and explosives.

Subsequently, he pleaded guilty on all three accounts.

The Senior Magistrate told the court the recommendations to be lenient when handing down sentencing on the defendant were not taken into consideration because he was previously charged with a reckless act, where he intentionally used a nail gun to cause harm.

@ dude: let see what the others get from having those high powered weapons because a 22 is nothing to compare to those AK’s

So sad, he will get out when he is 55 years old. 47 is old enough to know the consequences of carrying firearms. Sorry he got that amount of time, but those are the risks you took.

It's called the law, idiot. What do you want them to do, make up their own rules as it relates to sentencing?!?

I think concurrently means the jail times run together so realy he is serving 5 years only and time off for good behaviour etc. I hope I am wrong if not magistrate shame on you with all the gun violence we have 5 years is not enough to make others think twice about having a gun.

continue to be our judge. There can be a reason he had such for self defense and it should be licenced or was this a set up to also bring him down.Someone had to know he had such may be the seller or buyer. So many things but all hope is not lost as long as there is life there is hope while @ Balsum Ghaut reflect on your life and ask God not only into your life but for his guidance and protection it is never too late as with God all things are possible. Forget the critics hold on to God He will never leave you nor forsake you.

He without sin cast the first stone... "Let God be and" you're right, this is a time for reflection. It is unfortunate that he didn't get rid of that firearm when he had the opportunity to. A firearm is a firearm even if it is corroded and perhaps can't work. Karma is a *itch; the woman that attempted to use vengeance to destroy someone will have her day

It should be ten years minimum for fire arms possession if we are serious about getting rid of guns.

Maybe it all depends on the size of the weapon.
A 22 is the smallest gun around.
It can kill you like any other gun, but I think you more stand a chance of surviving depends on which part of your body you are shot.
