ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Last Saturday's festival of rugby, held on the A. O. Shirley Ground, was hailed as a great success with a good crowd enjoying some good hard rugby between BVI, Curacao, St Thomas Privateers and Princeton University Flying Tigers.

All in all five games took place with Princeton winning three, the BVI Select XV one and the other match ending in stalemate between Curacao and St Thomas.

The BVI team was bolstered by several players not eligible for Friday night's national duty such as Kiwi duo Mark Jones and Nigel Pettigrew. Jones alongside debutant John Addo and Ade Haffner greatly boosted the back line bringing some attacking intent and most importantly defensive resolve which had been missing the prior evening.

During the BVI’s first game, they narrowly lost to a tough Princeton team in a closely fought encounter. Some errant kicking from the BVI saw possession cheaply given away, however clearly wanting to prove a point after Friday night's loss, the effort was a vast improvement. After Princeton went ahead with a couple of scores Dustyn Molver went over from a well worked move for the BVI. In the second, half Andre Adams went over for a score after good interplay from the forwards, however despite a late rally the BVI could not quite get the all important winning score to clinch the game.

Friday night winners, Curacao, had numerous playing and drinking injuries from the night before so youngsters Jimmy, Victor and Chubby from the BVI youth team stepped up to the plate for Cuaracao’s game against St. Thomas. In a fiery encounter which ended 0-0 the three 15 year olds combined to drive several St Thomas forwards from the try line saving a couple of certain scores.

In the key game for BVI against local rivals St Thomas, the BVI led by Jones and Addo at half backs, tore St Thomas to pieces in a bad tempered encounter. Clinton Hempel combined well with Ian James in the forwards to give the BVI some thrust, with Jones feeding quick ball to the backline. Addo with two and Jones, both scored to give  the BVI the upper hand in the first half jinking through for opportune tries. The second half saw backs and forwards combining for some champagne rugby, which saw Victor Franklyn, Ade Haffner, Ian James and Andre Adams all score against a tired St. Thomas.

The final game of the day Princeton romped to a 24-0 win with the game called off early due to a serious concussion to one of the Curaco players and several other little incidents.

According to Ronan Kuscak, "All in all, the weekend was a great exhibition for the BVI’s ability to simultaneously host visiting rugby sides and no doubt the word will be spread amongst other Ivy league universities that the BVI is a the premier destination for sun, sea, sand, rum and decent rugby!"

The results were as follows:St Thomas 0 Princeton 36; BVI 10 Princeton 12; Curacao 0 St Thomas 0; Bvi 37 St Thomas 0 and Princeton 24 Curacao 0.
