ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- An inmate at Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) made a successful case to the Magistrate’s Court to have his bail amount lowered by $20,000.

Verne Forbes Jr, who is currently at Her Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut awaiting trial in the High Court on charges of Robbery and Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm, appeared via video link for reporting purposes on Tuesday, September 10, 2019.

Towards the end of his hearing, Forbes Jr made a request to Magistrate Ayanna O. Baptiste-DaBreo to have his $80,000 signed bail offered to him in a previous court appearance reduced.

He said there were sureties willing to sign his bail if it was in the $60,000 or $40,000 range.

Magistrate DaBreo said, “I have no issues in lowering it from $80,000 to $60,000.”

She then informed the court that the bail amount now stands at $20,000 less than the original amount.

Drug matter dismissed

The accused also had a drug-related matter against him dismissed.

The court did not specify what type of drug nor the quantity involved in this matter, but the offence occurred on December 24, 2017.

Crown Counsel Melissa K. Brewley told the court, “The drugs haven’t been tested. The Crown is offering no evidence in relations to this matter.”

Magistrate DaBreo then informed Forbes Jr that the matter against him had been dismissed.

Crazy is an understatement. That absolutely ridiculous!!! Lack of competency. Perhaps they will say ,Irma blew away their test strips and the drugs got wet.

Do we test drugs here? “NO”. We have to depend on outside analysts to do the testing and if that outside analysts is not available or refused to work for the Government of the BVI, how will we get our drugs tested. Some of our young graduates need to target these areas of study so that we can have our own people in place. Pathology is another area that really needs a young BVIslander.
