FLORIDA, USA – Virgin Islander Rikkoi A.R. Brathwaite opened his Collegiate career with a bang, smashing the Virgin Islands’ (VI) national 60 metres indoor record in winning the event at the Hoosiers Open on December 7, 2018.

According to a report from SayfCarib Sports, the Indiana University redshirt freshman clocked 6.68 seconds, nipping Purdue University’s Samso Colebrooke, for the win.

The time broke the record set in 2013 by Shane Crawford (6.69) and eclipsed Dion K. Crabbe’s 16-year-old national record of 6.71 (2002).

Significant improvements

It significantly improves on his previous best of 6.75 set in the preliminaries and sits atop the early season NCAA rankings.

The report states that the 19-year-old opened his Collegiate account by lowering his previous best of 6.78 set in January of last year when he finished runner-up to Colebrooke in heat 2.

The Road Town, Tortola, native was outstanding at the high school level for IMG Academy in Florida ranking 16th nationally at 100m (10.34) and made the semi-finals of the IAAF World U20 Championships in Finland last year.
