ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – After two days of feverish action, the Championship games brought to a close the K and J 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament on Sunday April 2, 2017 at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.

The games had begun on the previous day with 9-12 Boys, 13-15 Boys, Open Ladies, 16-18 Boys and Open Men’s games under a first to 21 or time elapsed format.

Teams were also given the chance to survive an early defeat under the rules of Double Elimination, which allows for a team to lose twice before being completely knocked out of contention.

When all was said and done, the trophies went to Clutch in the 9-12 bracket, Arrow Gang in the 13-15’s and Go Hard in the Ladies. Junior Bayside Blazers won the 16-18 bracket and Relentless the Men’s Open.

The Junior Bayside Blazers players were Devante A. Brewley, Jachoy M. S. Walwyn, Nixon M. Hamilton and Lestin S. Wiltshire. Nathaniel J. Malone was the  coach for the Junior Bayside Blazers team as well as the coach for the Senior Bayside Blazers squad.

“It was a good turnout,” commented Co-Director, Jason A. Edwin. “They were competitive from start to finish and the excitement has given us the energy and drive to sit down with all the sponsors and stakeholders to plan for season four.”

Controversial win for Relentless

At the beginning on March 2, 2017 of the game between Bayside Blazers and Relentless it appeared that the basketball was thrown by a Bayside Blazers' player, Dextroy D. Manswell, to Ray D. Victor. This resulted in an aggressive move by Mr Victor, who threw the ball back at Mr Manswell in a hostile manner.

Mr Manswell then pushed Mr Victor, which almost started a fight before the game. Team mate Juan R. Hatchett for Relentless also intervened showing much disrespect to the referees and threatening also to fight the referees.

He was given a technical by the referee and he continued his unsportsmanlike behaviour and was eventually thrown out of the game. Another team player from Relentless, Victor, was also given a technical, and in fact both teams, Bayside Blazers and Relentless, were given warnings and technicals.

With Mr Juan R. Hatchett out of the game and the match up ready to re-start, the Directors of the K & J tournament intervened again, overriding the referees’ decision and causing further confusion and controversy before the game was played.

I was wrong- Victor

Meanwhile, Victor told Virgin Islands News Online that he was in the wrong to have retaliated and that he has no issues with Mr Manswell…off the court!

"Our issues go way back from the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed League when we threw his team [Bayside Blazers] out of the tournament. I have no issues with Mr Manswell off the court.”

Relating the incident, Mr Victor said he had “made a big move” and scored on the big man Manswell. “I yelled out ‘he small’ referring to Manswell because I know he don’t like to hear that. It was like a Michael Jordan taunt and I was walking past him. That was when he threw the ball in my chest…when I was walking off.

Mr Victor further said he retaliated by chest passing the ball back to Mr Manswell’s chest and asked him why he threw the ball at him.” At this time, according to Mr Victor, the referee intervened.

Mr Manswell then reportedly walked up to Mr Victor and told him “don’t ever do it again” and pushed Mr Victor.

Further, Mr Victor said his team mate Mr Juan R. Hatchett became upset after he, Victor, was given a technical even though he did not initiate the confrontation and was the one "chucked."

Victor added that both him and Hatchett were thrown out of the game, however, it was one of the tournament directors, Mr Kennedy H. Bass, that intervened and restored order, allowing both men to continue playing.

For their win, the Relentless team of Shaquille T. Fonseca, Ray D. Victor, Romain D. Minott and Juan R. Hatchett pocketed a cash prize of $1200.

We will continue to participate- Willock

When contacted, Bayside Blazers Manager Julian Willock declined to comment on the controversy, stating that he continues to support the K&J 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament and will continue to have teams participate.

Director of the K&J 3 on 3 Tournament, Mr Jason A. Edwin also declined to comment specifically on the controversy, choosing instead to say that the organisors were pleased with the level of performance at the tournament.

“Fans and players enjoyed the weekend. We have seen areas where we could make some adjustments and will do so to ensure things run a lot smoothly for the fans and players alike.”

U should see how they act up in the country gym. Their egos are more important than the game or the sport.
I understand having to use the Wilson ball but it's too spongey. We need a coaching and fundamental basketball clinic still. Guys still don't move without the ball and use basketball basics despite claiming they "bad" And it forces the advanced players to have to play together if they can get along.
Good job by K & J overall. Maybe I'll participate in the next one.
