For those who did not actively participate in the races they also had a sense of satisfaction knowing that they were a tower of moral support and for some getting a taste of the ZUMBA style dance aerobic workout was a priceless treat. Photo: VINO

PETER ISLAND, VI – When the organizers of the Peter Island-Athlon Challenge did their counts of those registered for the event held yesterday at Peter Island Resort, they were nothing but amazed and overwhelmed with emotions at the figure of 110 registrants.

“Last year we had about 40 this year we have 110, this is phenomenal, thanks for your support, we really appreciate it,” General Manager of Peter Island Resort and Spa Mr Wilbert A. Mason told participants at the conclusion of the day’s events.

The Resort has recently adopted the Family Support Network (FSN) as a non-governmental organization in the Virgin Islands (VI) that they have been supporting financially and yesterday’s event was one of many to come to raise funds for the organization.

Mr Mason told this News Site that close to $3K was raised yesterday and will be donated to FSN.  President of FSN Ms Judith Charles and members of the board of directors along with volunteers were on hand to assist with the execution of the events and she returned thanks.

During a brief ‘pow wow’ at the prize giving yesterday at the resort, participants and other supporters present were overwhelmed when Ms Charles took to the microphone and in a nutshell spoke of the work of the FSN, a 25 year old organisation.

“We are still the only organization in the BVI that deals with victims of domestic violence and their families… we do all the protection orders we get. We are sent clients from lawyers and the police and wherever,” said Ms Charles.

“We do everything for those people that they need or that we can and what we can’t do we refer out,” Ms Charles noted.

She also said that over the years the organization has revolved in order to remain relevant and current, a move which has seen them dealing with the current trend of problems faced by especially women and children. “We are getting a lot of children now unfortunately; we are doing court mandated programmes, for anger management for women… We are non-profit so we are very dependent on people like you,” she added.

The day’s activities, while cognizant of the cause, saw participants engaged in some keen competition to the extent that one could not fail to notice as a relatively sizable group of young children did their bit with much excitement and determination. But at the end of the day the champions walked away with number of prizes.

Taking the 1st place prize in the aquathon was Mark Doig in the male category and Natasha Ruscheinski for the females. The Triathlon male champion was Anthony Spencer and female was Kathleen Brownstone.

Anthony Spenser, Alastair Abrehart and Chris Smith took away the 1st place prizes for the Triathlon Team event. For the walkers Sonia was the champion.

For those who did not actively participate in the races they also had a sense of satisfaction knowing that they were a tower of moral support and for some getting a taste of the ZUMBA style dance aerobic workout was a priceless treat.

This year was the first time around that the monies raised by the athletics event are being donated to the FSN.
