Radio show caller asks why no questions to Dep Premier

Persons want to know why the Opposition never asked questions of Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr the Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering (R7) over the last three years. Photo: VINO/File
Speculation has been rife about the Deputy Premier defecting to the VIP and that this must be the reason that the Opposition is ‘soft’ on him in terms of questions. However, during a sitting of the House of Assembly on December 15, 2014, he vehemently dismissed such speculation. Photo: VINO/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A caller to a radio talk show stirred up controversy when he posed a question to talk show host Doug Wheatley on Friday March 6, 2015 asking why it was that the Opposition never asked questions of Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr the Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering (R7).

“Do you know the reason why the Opposition has never asked the Deputy Premier any question,” asked the caller about seven minutes into the programme.

“No I don’t,” responded host Wheatley. The caller continued, “Do you realise that for the last three years of the Government in power and the Opposition never asked him a question?”

In response, host Wheatley said, “I wasn’t really aware but I think when you raise the question I think to the Virgin Islands Party (VIP), I think I started thinking about it and realise that I had not seen them asking him any question.”

Speculation has been rife about the Deputy Premier defecting to the VIP and that this must be the reason that the Opposition is ‘soft’ on him in terms of questions. However, during a sitting of the House of Assembly on December 15, 2014, he vehemently dismissed such speculation.

“A lady pulled me aside and whispered in my ear and asked me a question: ‘Dr Pickering what is it I hear about you leaving the NDP to join the VIP because they offer you Premiership?’ and I answered her in the affirmative…absolute nonsense! And I want to say it publicly…whether it is people in my organization saying it or outside of my organization,” Dr Pickering said during that sitting.

“Dr D. Orlando Smith and I have been working together since 1986 and we have been working together over the past 22 years on a daily basis. We went through some rough times in that operating room in the wee hours of the morning,” he said.

“Those who are perpetuating it and trying to cast aspersions on my character I want to say publicly, stop that foolishness. I ain’t going nowhere,” he said during the sitting.

“When Dr Smith leaves this country and the Government appoints me acting Premier he could sleep wherever he is. I am an original member of this organisation…I ain’t going nowhere. Ain’t nothing anybody could offer me. I want to make that clear and hope that this rumour dies down,” said Dr Pickering in a very agitated manner.

When a member of the public posed this question on the VIP’s Let’s Talk radio show some weeks ago, Chairman of the VIP Honourable Julian Fraser RA (R3) said it was mere coincidence, explaining that as Opposition members of the House of Assembly there is no comparing notes. He said further that they may ask what each other is asking about so that there is no duplication.

He is responsible for Labour and the Airport expansion, two of the most hot button topics and no questions? They concerned about the cruise pier costing $60 mil but no concern about the Airport costing over $200 Mil? Give me a damn break.

Who is irrelevant now? When last you see or hear from Raja? He off the radio and no more interviews, they don't want him running on their slate. He has been used, abused then refused, off to the side. Poor thing.

People please realise that although we have grown accustom of just the Opposition asking questions, the law allows ANY ELECTED MEMBER OF THE HOUSE to ask any Minister a question. So if the back benchers want to ask a Minister a question they can. So if NDP needs a question asked of Kedrick tell them to ask him themselves.

Leave lieing dogs stay low. In due time he will answer all questions. He thinks he is working for man. It is God will ask him the questions. Stay tune for question and answer.

he's working for those who need private jet space and a bigger runway. He talks about the environment yet jeopardizes it with disruptive projects. With the airport comes expansion of landside-- hotel, restaurants, gift shops, trellis commercial centre. Don't think it doesn't.
