ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The President of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Association of the BVI, Devon D. Letteen, has urged nationals from those islands to place aside petty grievances, ill-fated thoughts that they might be harbouring towards each other and continue to work smart towards self-development while striving for peace and tranquility in the territory.

His remarks come in light of the 37 year- Independence milestone, today Thursday October 27, 2016, of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

“Let us continue to stand strong for what is right like our mountains, while shining brightly like the sun that brightens our skies in our homeland St Vincent and the Grenadines and by extension our adopted home the British Virgin Islands. Happy Independence!” he said in a statement.

Letteen noted that Independence is symbolic because it puts into focus a people’s ability and strength to be self-reliant while enjoying the rewards of working together in harmony and to serve as a reminder of the struggles of their forefathers, who fought for the freedom which today allows for the enjoyment of a peaceful society.

“This significant milestone must move us to reflect, renew and revitalise our efforts to maintain our beloved country Hairoun, Home of the Blessed and this beautiful country and society that we love which allows us to continuously exercise our democratic rights and freedoms without fear of prosecution, and where we can uphold the rule of law,” the statement continued.

Treat others with respect

Furthermore, the St Vincent and the Grenadines Association of the BVI pointed out that SVG nationals should be proud of their successes and importantly, they must be reminded to treat their fellow Vincentians, other Caribbean and international citizens with respect, valuing the differences in opinion of others while continuing to help build a sustainable society for all to enjoy.

“We have shown that we have the ability to overcome our differences while working with our brothers and sisters to build a strong community,” he said.

He is also asking the expatriates to avoid turning a blind eye to the ills that continuously threaten to erode the fabric of our society such as, but not limited to, the disrespect for self and authority, negative messages distributed through social network/media, rise in criminal activities and disregard for the symbols of their identity such as their National Flag, Pledge, and Anthem.

“We must continue to ask ourselves if this is the image we wish to portray, or if this is the legacy we want to leave behind for the younger generation to follow and whether our forefathers who toiled tirelessly will be proud of us.”

Letteen, explained that at the association’s meeting at the BVI Red Cross’s building, on Thursday October 6, 2016, it was decided that the address to the nationals be made, since, “the country is celebrating independence today and for those nationals who can’t make it home I think it is fitting for them to be reminded of their Independence,” he told Virgin Islands News Online.

The association is scheduled to meet again today at the same location at about 6:15 P.M. to observe their country’s independence.

This is Letteen’s  first address to St Vincent and the Grenadines nationals since he became president of the association two years ago.

We need to monitor these outside associations and put a ceiling on the amount allowed to migrate from any country wanting to settle here.

First we have a meeting by the Saint Kitts and Nevis Association, now the SVG Association? Sadly the place is already oversaturated with expatriates.

How can one be a Tortolian in your home America? Obviously the person you are calling Tortolian has a right to be in the USA. They don't let you in so easily, except in New Mexico, Texas and those places where Trump wants to build the wall. I feel there should be a quota on how many persons from one island or country can relocate in the Virgin Islands each year. First batch, put a quota on Europeans, especially white South Africans.

Sir,it is the people of the BVI who are aggrieved. How could you be addressing your countrymen without taking note of their antisocial behaviour resulting in excessive utiluzation of the prison judicial system in this country?Shameless and a waste of the BVI resources. Set up a training group and teach them how to be civil.

    and teaching them some civility.

All that he said is true. But with the same token. He must encourage his people to stay in their homeland and work to build instead of draining the Virgin Islands. Visit and go home. Leave the jobs for Virginislanders.
