Premier switches on new traffic signals at Wickham’s Cay 11

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The inclement weather this morning November 3, 2011 did not stop the flow of traffic on the roads and neither did it stop the Ministry of Communications and Works from commissioning the Wickham’s Cay II traffic lights.

The commissioning ceremony comes almost two months after the signing of the contract between Government and JoClaud Enterprises Limited of Trinidad and Tobago to signalize the James Walter Francis Drive and Wickham’s Cay II/Pasea Intersection. The terms of the contract provided for the installation, supply, maintenance and operation of the traffic signals.

Premier Ralph T. O’Neal did the honour of switching on the lights in the presence of Minister for Communications and Works Hon. Julian Fraser, 5th District representative Hon. Elvis Harrigan, Director of JoClaud Enterprises, Ltd John C. Samuel among other persons.

The traffic lights will enable the flow of eastbound traffic to make a right turn into Wickham’s Cay II and allow for traffic exiting Wickham’s Cay II to also make a right turn on James Walter Francis Drive. A formal pedestrian crosswalk with a combination of road markings and crossing light activated by a push button are now in place.

The new lights at Wickham’s Cay II and the existing ones at Station Avenue are wirelessly interconnected to keep both in sync in order to ensure an efficient and coordinated flow of vehicular traffic.

The general public is being asked to follow the rules of the road and adhere to the traffic signals.

    These lights are great - i want to see more of them all over the place. I suggest at the tamarind tree by the police station, in huntums ghut/lower estate, by the school, by finefoods, coming out of the police marine base, Sea Cows Bay by the horse track, At the Beef Island bridge, nanny Cay, the college, by Fat Hog Bobs, at the top of Josiahs Bay, the intersection of main street and joes hill, lights at the end of the runway for when planes are coming in to land, by the police station in East End, pockwood pond, frenchmans cay junction, the first bar in paraquita bay and at Parham town, outside of Grams, at the Banco Popular drive through, the junction by Sebastians and a test one at the roundabout in Anegada. JVD, VG and Cooper island dont need them yet.

      you missed off the need for lights at the top of Sophie Bay hill, I want to see some there also.

    Isn't there a blind corner just before those lights was anything done to make sure people who are new to the VI or those not using common sense doesn't cause a major accident.

      If you look good will notice they are warning lights before the corner to let you know when the lights are changed.

      Lord have mercy you NDP people grapple at any straw. You talk about a hospital which contract you signed, you spoke about lands that the VIP bought back for the people, you even had a sick woman who they just named and auditorium after and who medical bills they paid go up on stage and curse them out. NDP you are grappling at straws. Dont you see two big lights about two hundred feet from the blind corner saying what the signal ahead is. You all like to twist the truth. It seems that anything good that benefit the people of this country you all criticize. The members of the investment clubs are not the only people that go to the polls remember that.

        The BVI voters are a smart set of people, they will never dear go back to the dark and gloomy days of 2003-2007 it was the lowest point in the history of the BVI..Too many people suffered…NO WAY WE GOING BACK TO THAT

    The lights are working great but Frazer we need a separate lane for those turning because it is holding up the flow of traffic!
