ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The relocation of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) Headquarters from the Sir Olva Georges Plaza and bringing in the BVI Tourist Board is an idea that was long touted around; however, Premier Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith still believes it is a practical idea.

The topic was brought up by host of NDP Radio Mrs Eileene L. Parsons during the programme last evening October 15, 2012.

“I remember a couple of years ago...I was in council, there was talk about moving the police station (Headquarters) out and putting the Tourist Board in the Plaza and I know I heard it, I don’t think I had a senior moment,” Mrs Parsons said.

Premier Smith, one of the guests on the show, acknowledged that the idea was brought up before regarding relocating the Police Headquarters.

“There was this suggestion some years ago. I think it is still a useful suggestion to find alternative accommodation for the police head [quarters]...A lot of thought has been put into how to revitalise Road Town,” Premier Smith responded.

Dr. Smith did not say, however, where the Headquarters should be relocated to.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Parsons also said she heard from persons that Road Town was just a ‘big parking lot” and was in dire need of revitalisation. Minister for Communications and Works Hon. Mark Vanterpool, who was also a guest on the show, agreed that persons have been making such remarks.

According to Premier Smith, "A lot of thought has gone into what to do to revitalize Road Town; it's crying out for action. One of the things the businesses recommended strongly is to, if not make it a walking street, at least put parking meters in because the fact that cars are parked along the entire Main Street, it is a parking garage actually, and if we can do something to dissuade that, maybe people might be encouraged to drive in and stop and visit some of the stores.”

The listening public was also told that a number of ideas regarding the revitalisation of Road Town are being discussed and this would be made known to the public shortly.

I suggest that you stop the traffic by closing off the street from the Oneal Drug store to Fonseca corner that way way no parking would take place and people would be able to walk that part of main street to shop on foot.

(if you are a USA student you would encourage opinions). This whole site is based on opinions and feed back. Who are you to police people's thoughts? We need MORE opinions.

Its at times like this that instead of making ideas known to the public, let the public direct the ideas. getting the public involved will build stronger alliances and emotional investments to make a better project. Also, moving the headquarters was discussed by the previous city manager, Eugenia O'Neal who had other great ideas, but was generally ignored and not taken seriously. Who has jurisdiction over RT? the manager or the minister of district 4? If there is a conflict, nothing will get done, and who has authority over DPW for example. "Come pick up trash". "the directive comes from the minister"... work these details out!
There also needs to have a city planner/ preservationist involved and in charge to make sure damage is not done to a historical building that ruins it forever. No one in government is qualified for such an assignment, hence the call for Ivor Jackson, Verna Moll and Ermin Penn.

As soon as Ronnie finishes the Hospital in 2015, we are going to relocate the Head Quarters on the top floor.

While I've always suggested that might be a good place for the TB office I think the approach should be handled carefully.....

(Mitt Romney got slaughtered in the 2nd debate. He is a cronic flip flopper and says things only to get elected. I'd be careful of that handle if I were you).

Everybody wants to move police headquarters. For years police begging for a new station which could include headquarters. Why don't the governments whowwhowant them move give them the long overdue station. I swear we are more concerned with the people passing through the islands than the people that reside here.
