Police want better relationship with Hispanic community – Ag. Commissioner

EAST END/LONG LOOK Tortola, VI – In response to a query about reaching out to the local Hispanic community, Ag. Commissioner of Police David Morris has expressed that measures are being made to once again engage with this section of the population.

During a police consultative group meeting held at the East End/Long Look Communty Centre on November 19, 2012 one resident complained that she was told that a translator would be present to assist in relating her concerns once she was there.

This did not materialise, however, and an apology was offered by chairman of the proceedings, Mr Rawle Cupid. He stated that the representative was off island at the time.

Acting Commissioner David Morris expressed that the issue of reaching out to the Spanish speaking community was of some concern to him, especially given the recent stabbing incident involving a Dominican Republic national that took place in Sea Cows Bay.

Last Friday, November 16, 2012 Dominican national Riky Bautista Familia aka Macotica and Manuel was stabbed to death near Maria’s Bar in Sea Cows Bay after a heated argument had allegedly occurred. Police have since expressed an interest in speaking to Alberto Rosa de la Rosa in the matter.

Meanwhile, Ag. Commissioner Morris expressed that there were currently only two Spanish speaking officers in the RVIPF and these officers had to be deployed from other areas to the Sea Cows Bay crime scene to assist with investigations.

During the meeting residents had also expressed concerns about officers being mobilised, either on foot patrol or in their vehicles, to interact with residents of the East End/Long Look community. One resident said that Police were no longer talking to the community members and he felt this was regrettable.

The Ag. Commissioner noted that the RVIPF’s resources were severely limited in the area but felt that efforts were still being made to mobilise officers as best as possible in spite of the constraints being faced.

The Ag. Commissioner of Police is deluding himself by thinking this is a public relations war, which can be won by gimmicks...he needs to reach out to all communities, black, white, Latinos, gays, lesbian, expats, businesses ALL

Shouldn't he be trying to foster better relations with the officers in his force before he engages similiarly within the community?

Charity begins at home. SO first to thyself be true!

He shouldn't have to. They should do what they are being paid for. Sometimes in life you have to do what you are told (follow orders), regardless of whether or not you want to.

Dear Mr.Morris,Sir:Please do not take my comments personal, because I have never met you in person:My first assessment of you sir,was when you told a news conference in june/july 2010 that you had come all the way from UK just to weed-out undesirables in the police force.I guess fraser could not weed dem out.you did not tell us that you come to help solve and prevent crime.you were more concern with gossip:Looking at the headline of this news,I ask myself, where was morris all the time? On short-leave again?section 7. of the police act makes provision giving you the authority as DCP to assist the COP;but when you were DCP,you never showed up here there and everywhere. While I would like to see all race live in harmony in the BVI,I believe that the police reach out to all persons when they can.But honestly sir,you must stay in your office;let alwin james, roy stoutt and st.claire armoury go to these meetings.jump high or low,the Governor will still appoint you COP;its not the public who has to vote for a COP like in sime US states; so relax yourself MR.Morris,But I do not support you to be the COP of the BVI force. You are the DCP,stay DCP.Give me Roy Stoutt or Alwin James to be COP.That's just my Constitutional views-OK-Kool.
