Police want better relationship with Hispanic community – Ag. Commissioner
During a police consultative group meeting held at the East End/Long Look Communty Centre on November 19, 2012 one resident complained that she was told that a translator would be present to assist in relating her concerns once she was there.
This did not materialise, however, and an apology was offered by chairman of the proceedings, Mr Rawle Cupid. He stated that the representative was off island at the time.
Acting Commissioner David Morris expressed that the issue of reaching out to the Spanish speaking community was of some concern to him, especially given the recent stabbing incident involving a Dominican Republic national that took place in Sea Cows Bay.
Last Friday, November 16, 2012 Dominican national Riky Bautista Familia aka Macotica and Manuel was stabbed to death near Maria’s Bar in Sea Cows Bay after a heated argument had allegedly occurred. Police have since expressed an interest in speaking to Alberto Rosa de la Rosa in the matter.
Meanwhile, Ag. Commissioner Morris expressed that there were currently only two Spanish speaking officers in the RVIPF and these officers had to be deployed from other areas to the Sea Cows Bay crime scene to assist with investigations.
During the meeting residents had also expressed concerns about officers being mobilised, either on foot patrol or in their vehicles, to interact with residents of the East End/Long Look community. One resident said that Police were no longer talking to the community members and he felt this was regrettable.
The Ag. Commissioner noted that the RVIPF’s resources were severely limited in the area but felt that efforts were still being made to mobilise officers as best as possible in spite of the constraints being faced.
