‘Penalise those making inaccurate statements in HOA’ – Hon Fahie
Honourable Fahie was speaking on December 21, 2015 during the Fifth Sitting of the First Session of the Third House of Assembly.
It was during the debate on the report by the Standing Orders Committee where he made a number of points for the bolstering of transparency within the operations of the House of Assembly.
“Any information coming to this House, Madam Speaker, whether it be by the Leader of the Opposition or junior Ministers making statements must be factual, must be accurate and Madam Speaker if it found not to be the penalties should be clear.”
He said that anything to improve the standard of the House in a transparent, accountable and forward thinking manner that looks beyond the current actors in the roles of Representatives and ministers at this opportune time, he is for it.
“But any narrow thinking Madam Speaker which seems like it is giving one side the edge over the other Madam Speaker will meet my resistance,” he said.
For several months, especially during the lead up to the 2015 general elections in the Virgin Islands, Honourable Fahie has been consistent with his call for persons to be accurate when making statements in the House, which they do under oath.
During the elections campaign, Honourable Fahie challenged persons from the Government's side to make certain statements in the House of Assembly, where they will be speaking under oath, and not just along the campaign trail.
Honourable Fahie through his questions had also in the months gone by uncovered variances in the answers proffered by the Government especially on spending and financial matters, where in one case the Premier Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith presented at least three sets of answers for the same question posed to him by Honourable Fahie in the House of Assembly.
