ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Henry Bellingham MP, Minister for the Overseas Territories is making his first visit to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) on April 21, following a visit to the Cayman Islands.

This will also be the first visit to the Territory by a British government minister since April 2009.

This three day visit will reinforce the relationship between the BVI and the United Kingdom (UK) and the close ties between the two governments.

Mr. Bellingham will meet with the Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE, and other members of Government to discuss a range of topics including BVI’s financial strategy, the forthcoming Overseas Territories White Paper which is entitled “The Overseas Territories: Security, Success, Sustainability”, and the Territory’s involvement in the celebrations of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games.

Speaking ahead of his visit, Henry Bellingham said: “I am really looking forward to visiting the Virgin Islands, which I have heard and read so much about. BVI has a reputation for a world class financial services industry and a renowned tourism industry. I look forward to meeting the Premier and a cross section of the community across the Territory.”

Premier Smith said: “I warmly welcome Mr Bellingham’s visit. I am pleased he has accepted our invitation to visit the BVI and I look forward to discussing with the Minister ways in which our partnership can be further strengthened.”

Mr. Bellingham’s visit will encompass a number of other key areas including the environment, law enforcement, financial services, tourism, disaster management and the educational and sporting links between the Virgin Islands and Hertfordshire in the UK. He will also take the opportunity to visit the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College and Virgin Gorda.
