'Not a peek from the Opposition on NHI' - Winston E. Nibbs

Talk show commentator calls out Opposition regarding their silence on NHI
It is apposite to note that during the entire debate on the NHI and the petition that has been put forward and which has gathered over 700 signatures, there was no input from the Opposition members Honourable Julian Fraser (R3) and Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1). Photo: VINO/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Guest on Tuesday night's October 13, 2015 Speak Out BVI radio talk show Winston E. Nibbs aka La Fontey called out members of the Opposition over their silence with regard to the National Health Insurance (NHI) debate.

The show, hosted by Natalio D. Wheatley aka Sowande Uhuru, was aired on ZBVI 780 AM and had as guests Nibbs and social commentator and talk show host Edmund G. Maduro.

"This might be a little lash but I have to do it. Right now we haven't heard a peek from the Honourable Opposition. So what is going on here?" Nibbs asked.

At this point Wheatley interjected to drive home the point that elected representatives should represent the people and hence the Opposition's silence on the NHI debate was not acceptable.

"What we have to ask ourselves Brother Nibbs is what does it mean to represent people? What does it mean to govern? People have their lives to live every day. You have to drive on the road, you have to send your children to school. You have affairs that you conduct every single day in your own best interest and you elect people who are supposed to secure that interest on a number of different areas. What is more important than your health?" asked Wheatley.

It is worth noting that during the entire debate on the NHI and the petition that has been put forward and which has gathered over 700 signatures, there was no input from the Opposition members Honourable Julian Fraser (R3) and Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1).

Nibbs those 2 guys don't even show up to the sittings at house of assembly much less give a !uck about NHI: the one fellow from the 3rd spoke about the closure of the government treasury and i assume because he wanted his share of money... "if" the 2 of them actually shows up to Assembly meetings it just for lunch because they say nothing during the sitting about matters that are affecting the people of the territory: the rep from the 3 always followed up on his business interest namely biwater but that gone now!!!( no wonder home boy was eager about the treasury being closed)

Perhaps, he means "peep?" A "peek" means we haven't seen anything. A "peep" means we haven't heard anything!! I guess both are correct!!

They can't say anything as they too would have put NHI in place. I continue to say it is a good thing and in time to come you all will see as long as it ain't fall through and there must be accountability and transparency.

Accountability and transparency in the BVI? Really? That is the biggest problem in this place. 120 Million plus hospital that was originally budgeted for 64 million and not one person held accountable for that. 8 million dollar bridge, 5 million dollar greenhouse which we yet to get a dollar out of, Pier project whose costs keeps growing daily and the list goes on and on.

Again the Government is subsidizing the NHI with taxpayers' monies, the same taxpayers who have to pay 3.75% monthly into the scheme ( some 7.50 % if self employed) and on top of that have to come up with a co-payment up to 40% in some cases. So what we have is an additional 3.75% tax for most, and 7% for others. Based on precedent I do not entrust the government to properly manage the NHI.

Pep is leading the Opposition. It's a shame what's going on in the BVI with the VIP. NHI will be a good thing for the county in the long run once it is fair and balance. But at the moment there are lots of things in the bill that needs fixing and they must not go on deaf ears. By the way I love the cartoon lol.

People we need fresh blood in the house when you are there too long especially like these two guys and some on the other side you become complacent. You have heard about a long-term leader becoming a dictator well you have some people who feels that the needs of the people and the issues they want defended are not important to them.

The opposition for the past three terms has been weak because each of them at different time has cooked the pot when they were on the Gov side and made it sour for the people.

But sadly when we get people in there who will stand up and fight for the people we vote them out because these people who we vote for is a reflection of our ignorance blindness and greed that has taken over this country as a whole. But we must all remember pride cometh before the fall.

The majority of people in the BVI voted overwhelmingly for NHI when they re-elected the NDP in great numbers. Now these same people cursing the Opposition for not standing up against what most of the same people that fussing voted for. Smh

God is good. Just imaging if VIP had win election. They will be killing each other for positions and power. VIP had 4 years did nothing. They should have been the one to eliminate the board and introduce NHI with a medical Czar. Sorry they put streets lights up. That was good.. They didn't understand that people voted them in for change. But they changed nothing. They kept everything NDP implemented. If so we don't need them. The people voted wisely.
