ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – After evaluating and tabulating the nomination day process of yesterday May 22, 2015 Supervisor of Elections Mrs Juliette Penn recommended that nominating of candidates for general elections be closed at noon in future.

Mrs Penn was at the time addressing members of the media at a quickly called press conference designed to release the results of the Nomination Day activities. Responding to questions posed, Mrs Penn said that the day went smoothly with only one candidate turning up shortly before the 4:00pm closing.

“I think the whole process went smoothly, I didn’t have any complaints coming in from any of the Returning Officers. The only complaint I had was perhaps the time should be shortened,” she said.

She added, “Most of the candidates were nominated before 12 this afternoon with the exception of Mr Wheatley, Sowande Whealtey (Natalio D. Wheatley) who came in about basically 3:30 – 3:45 but all the other candidates were there before 12 o’clock.”

“I would think it went as I expected. There was only one person that was not out there who had declared that was actually nominated today and that was Mr Lorie Rhymer. There was no indication as far as I know that he was going to be a candidate in this election.”

Mr Lorie A. Rhymer will be contesting At Large under the People’s Empowerment Party (Pep) ticket.

Contrary to reports that one candidate under the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) was rejected, Mrs Penn said, “I am not aware of that.”

Territorial Candidates

According to statistics released by Mrs Penn, this year has a total number of 16 candidates nominated as Territorial candidates. For the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) there are 4, National Democratic Party (NDP) 4, People’s Progressive Coalition Movement 3, People’s Empowerment Party (PEP) 3 and there were 2 Independents: Dr Rawle R. Hannibal and Mrs Dancia Penn.

There are a total of 26 persons nominated for Districts. In the First District there are 3 candidates, Second District 3, Third District 2, Fourth District 2, Fifth District 3, Sixth District 3, Seventh District 2, Eighth District 2 and a record breaking number of candidates for District Nine: 6.

The VIP and National Democratic Party (NDP) have nominated persons for all nine electoral districts and all four Territorial At Large seats. PEP has nominations in the 2nd, and 9th districts and 3 Territorial At Large candidates.

The People’s Progressive Coalition Movement has no candidate running at the district level.

Why close 12? What`s you all working schedule.? Was Sowande late or not? Did Sowande break the rules? Why it has to be your way?

Why stay open pass 12 noon when 41 candidates were already registered by then? It draws out the process. This whole thing could have been wrapped up by 4:00 p.m. Instead of closing nominations at 4:00p.m. then waiting for VG and JVD and Anegada nominations to be sent to Tortola. The time they reach its 6:00 then you have people working late unnecessarily, tabulating and checking the list and then you end up leaving at 8:00 p.m.. It's about being effective and not having officers deployed all day when the job is in actuality only requires 4 hours.

They call it nomination day for a reason, it's a DAY. Not a half-day. Closing half day follows the same foolish patterns such as stopping the government cashiers from taking money after 3pm instead of 430. Soon customs won't be able to process your payment when you arrive on the last ferry from St Thomas.

What next close the polls the poles when you don't see any voters for a while?

why the hate and disrespect have to come in. At the end of the day, June 8 will pass and all of us have to live here, and it is best that we do so in peace and in love. If most of us had to put a name to these hateful blogs, all of us would be silent. You are definitely not smart enough to see that the glasses are special prescription glasses. I have had eye surgery and had to wear them around the clock. Pray to God that you remain 20/20.
