‘No water: You can’t brush; you can’t flush!’ - SCB Resident
“This water situation is terrible. We don’t have water from Sunday August 2, 2015,” said Claire Mills. She said there had been a break in the pipe on the hill where she lives.
“If Water and Sewerage has an emergency crew to turn off the water they should have an emergency crew to fix it,” she said.
“It is ridiculous to be without water from Sunday until today Tuesday. That is three whole days without water,” she said.
“Our cistern is dry because it is not raining. It ain’t got no rain in Tortola,” she said, commenting on the ongoing dry spell the territory has been experiencing for the past several months.
“Four or five apartments [residents] have to be juggling water from point A to point B. Who ain’t going by the well going to Nanny Cay and that is downright ridiculous,” she said. “It is punishment for people and it is wrong. I bet you the horse track will have water for the races,” said Mills.
“You can’t brush, you can’t flush, you can’t do nothing. My mother is 80 years old and she don’t have water [to use] and nobody gives a damn.”
Efforts to reach personnel from the Water and Sewerage Department for a comment on the issue proved futile.
Hon Fraser speaks up for residents
Speaking to this news site, Leader of the Opposition Honourable Julian Fraser RA (R3) said he made an intervention on the woman’s behalf but it seems to be of no avail.
“Yes, I've contacted Water and Sewerage [Department] on Saturday August 1, 2015 about a broken pipe, they went and turned the water off, the lady (Mills) reported not having water so I contacted Water and Sewerage [Department] again on Sunday and asked that they turn the water back on. I was promised that they would,” he related.
“The lady again reported having no water, so I tried calling yesterday without luck, so I sent them a text. I got no response,” he said.
“[I] just got off the phone with Water and Sewerage Department and they are telling me that on more than one occasion since they initially shut off the water on Saturday, they turned it back on so residents can get water. Evidently that is not this lady's experience,” said Honourable Fraser.
Efforts to reach Minister for Communications and Works Hon Mark H. Vanterpool were not successful.
