‘No more backdoor access for disabled persons’ – Richard C. de Castro

- said that there should be a framework in place with Government’s involvement to ensure there is proper public access

De Castro said that owners of properties must be “encouraged” to provide a minimum amount of access to persons who are challenged. “And I don’t mean a backdoor entrance…that is a no-no in my opinion. I want to see access in the front of the building where you have for able-bodied people and then at the side you have an access for disabled people,” he said strongly. Photo: Internet source

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Television talk show host Richard C. de Castro is calling for owners of buildings to ensure that their edifices are outfitted for entrance facilities that would allow access to persons who are considered disabled or differently abled.

“I think that we have come to the stage where we have to look at providing some sort of framework for access into buildings and I think it is very important for having this framework in place even with government’s assistance,” said de Castro while speaking on his television talk show Speak Your Mind on Saturday October 17, 2015 on JTV Live.

He said owners of properties must be “encouraged” to provide a minimum amount of access to persons who are challenged. “And I don’t mean a backdoor entrance…that is a no-no in my opinion. I want to see access in the front of the building where you have for able-bodied people and then at the side you have an access for disabled people,” he said strongly.

De Castro said that in this light it might be a good idea to get public libraries on ground floors so that persons who have physical challenges could have easy access to them.

“This is reading month and reading is connected directly to the library and I am going to say this, that the library is one of the places where we should fight to get it on the ground floor. We need to look at proper access,” he said.

The host called for such public accessibility in especially Government owned and rented buildings and also in places where the public have to access.

“Ladies and gentlemen we could do it and we don’t have to wait for a situation where we have to provide for one particular person. We can plan to do it from now and I think we can be successful as well,” said de Castro.

Decastro I am certainly on your side. It is time we make provision for disabled persons, especially having access to public buildings. Valid point. We never know when our turn will come, and only then we will see this need.

He has a point and I agree. Buildings should be accessible to the disabled not just the able bodied. What is it going to take from building owners to add a ramp for those who cant take the stairs. I've also witnessed several times tourists riding along our sidewalks in wheelchairs or mobile scooters and have difficulty maneuvering their way around....something to look at as well.
