ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Education Minister Hon. Myron V. Walwyn informed the House of Assembly yesterday, May 14, 2013 that there have been no budgeted amounts to the Ministry toward the building of a new school.

The Minister was questioned on this issue by Third District Representative Hon. Julian Fraser, RA during the ninth sitting of the second session of the second House of Assembly. Hon. Fraser asked whether the Minister was prepared to exercise a previous option to build a new school following a mould outbreak at one of the schools of the Territory.

The question followed concerns that arose following the relocation of students of the Isabella Morris Primary school due to the mould outbreak. Questions had been raised by concerned parties about whether a new school would be built to accommodate the students of the school. The students have since been temporarily placed at the Cane Garden Bay Community Centre.

Hon. Walwyn said he had been informed that the cost to construct a new school would be in the region of $2-$4M and took a jab at the former Virgin Islands Party (VIP) government when he stated that several schools could have been built previously if priorities were set in the right order.

He described the mould situation at the Isabella Morris Primary school as an unfortunate situation and stated that it was one which his Ministry continued to give urgent attention.

“It is important to note,” Hon. Walwyn stated, “that there are no monies in the Ministry’s budget to build a new school at this time and permission would have to be given through the Ministry of Finance and we know that will be difficult in the short to medium term.”

The Minister said that all options before the government were being explored diligently.

Hon. Walwyn also stated that the government would be also be looking at the needs of all the schools since there were other schools that need to be repaired with some needing substantial work. He added that an assessment would be taken at the appropriate time for this.

You said it hot. This is RIDICULOUS!!!

Our children are the future and we need to invest in our children. Government needs to get their acts together and put the money where it is needed.

Myron trying to shift our attention off of the real issues with the same old political NDP mischief. I am tired of his style of politics.

If the Opposition didn't bring pressure on this matter, Myron & his education gang would not have took it as serious.

New school?! People seem to think the government has a bottomless pit of money available. There weren't any ACs in my day and we were just fine. Some people complain and complain and the condition of where they live are worst than the condition of the schools. Just take out the darn ACs. Those buildings were not designed for no ACs.

I just read an article on the NDP site Platinum. I am shocked with Myron’s logic. So he says VIP wasted money, so let me waste even more. Hon. Walwyn, the VIP was voted out for such reasons and you seem to be following right in their footstep going to be voted out!

Listen up! Two wrongs diffinatley doesn’t make it right. I am soooo tired of the comparisons with the previous government, your bandwagon is in power which we expected more or better from but instead you guys are making us out to be the laughing stock of Natures Little Secrets. You Min. are crippling the small man who voted for you and are turning a blind eye on what we the people put you guys there to do. If you don’t know by now. you are far more worst than before. The comparison is plain to see and might i say quite obvious with no justification in the mismanagement of present Govt. funds. We have no money, well according to what you guys are raveling about but we are constantly seeing and finding out differently. Stop complaining on what the past Govt. did and focus in on what you are going to do for the people of these Islands. Plain out, Mins. you guys need to stop wasting Govt. money and get with the program period. Let sleeping dogs lie but instead you keep raising them up with all this hog wash, past sh… No wonder they have to blow the fire on aya a..!

It dont have to cost no 2-4 million dollars. All they have to do is kill the mold off the roof and from the outside walls and go upstairs on the building. then in the future take off the galvanised roof and put on a concrete roof and go up on that one as well. It will not cost a million

I think that the priority of the education system is now been realized as something to be a an assest. I don't know why mould would make a country spent 2-6 million dollar to build a school. I am seeing there need to be an evaluation on the minister part of the structure of all the schools and be considerate of the fact that the children are our future and the youths are our assest of this country, education is our top priority. Assessement for all the school should be done in the first year when the minister took office. This make me question what on earth is in that budget, more dinner for school teacher, a book deal, or no roof repair for school until 4 years, after then it become some other minister problem.
We all want to be problem solver by taking the easy way out, just build a school and everything is alright. I don't mind building the school , if thats the way to go, but make sure its the state of the art of a school. Make everything computerized, or a mattere of fact, forget all the structure and just have school on line. Yes some now laughing my suggestion, but this country is heading into a futurist zone and it is not prepared. In Singapore the student knows nothing about penmanship, everything is done on computer, every school lessons, assignment, and grades is online. We want to shell out money to some contract, who would increase his invoices like rain on duck back.
I suggest Mr. Minister, get a contract if you are going to build a school and get some of the expat (many of them skillful) to get some volunteer work on the school, especially those that got their papers, 50 of them can lay all the blocks, another 50 tie the steel get people to help the community they live in , their children will benefit. But only build a school if they cannot get raid of the mould. You are a businessman does business the old fashion way, it was a principle back in the days, let it work for us today, each man put their hand to the plough.

If we can't acommodate monies towards the assistance of our youths in regards of their health in becoming our future leaders, then what do we do? I propose the Politicians take all those consultant monies and their salaries for 1 year and invest it towards the youths....ok! What

goin happen now if all the schools tutn up with mold issues
