ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Word reaching our news desk is that there will not be a 2018 Miss BVI Pageant.

It appears that there are a number of reasons why this is the case, including lack of contestants and lack of funds, as the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) leaving the country broke can be felt in many areas.

Many have also claimed that festival in general has declined under Hon Myron V. Walwyn (AL), the Minister for Education and Culture, and that he has used divisive politics even in his heading of this area of his portfolio.

Backwards ever

It is unclear when was the last time there was not a Miss BVI Queen show, something that is such a staple to the Virgin Islands’ Annual Emancipation celebration, according to one senior NDP source.

However, there will be a Miss World BVI and they have three contestants so far, according to the same source.

Further, a 2018/19 Miss BVI is expected to be coronated around August 5, 2018, in other words,  one will be appointed without a fair and transparent competition. It is also unclear who will do the picking, for the coronation.

The Ministry of Culture and the Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee did not immediately return calls or answer our inquiries.

They don't need a queen show, just a waste of money plus the girls that run for queen is not ready. They waste money sending the girls to the international stage where they are not ready to compete.

I do agree, the girls is not ready for the International stage. It is so embarrassing to watch a pageant queen from the BVI standing on the International stage not even considered to be placed as a runner up. The girls from the BVI needs good sponsorship, public relations training, vocal coaches, makeup and hair sessions etc... That is how other Countries prepare their girls for the International stage.

Perfect example in the above photo. Look at the placing of the crown, both hands should have been on the crown while being placed on the winner's head.

Great news. There are much more important things than watching women parade for acceptance and money. We don’t have the money to send these people off to pageants accross the world when our schools need to be fixed.

700,000.00 for festival however the school(s) need urgent-care...not pointing any fingers because the hurricanes set up back....the only concern is what should be considered as priority at this time: I don’t think the territory have large sums of money to be doing this and doing that!!! Prudent spending is a must: fire department is shambles: Ports of Entry in bad shape: police stations out of commission: some of our people have no roofs....

Why they keep the Gospel night and then go ahead with the rest nights of ungodly music that's my question??? God is a man of honor and respect, why don't we respect him and honor him??? and we don't realize when you cross his path he shows you who is in control so having no carnival this year and having a ceremony of thanks and praise would be the best option so we can show our repentance unto him........................

Why not let Khephra - Miss BVI 2017 reign for another year instead. I know the hurricane ruined her reign and no one else is having a show so why not....These people don't know what they doing.

I would think the current queen would be in place until another is selected.

The BVI was hit by one of the strongest hurricanes that ever crossed the Atlantic then came Maria. We were devastated and is still going through the recovery process. Dozens of home are still without roofs. The home owner s are struggling to do repairs. Take a walk through what we called Psalm Grove Shopping Center in Road and see for your self. Its not like the Government is neglecting our Festival, there is simple no money to have one this year as we did before. We should be thankful that there is still plans to have down scale festivities. I STRONGLY believe that no one should be blamed at this moment.
