DUFF'S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- There has been a big shakeup in the Knights Basketball Team camp. Word just reaching our sports desk is that Head Coach Verne W. Turnbull aka Bego has been fired.

Knights are the runner's up of the 2014 Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League. They were beaten by Bayside Blazers in a best of three finals in November last year.

This year, in the 2015 season, they are one of 15 senior teams in the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League, however, they have won three games and lost two so far. They lost on the League’s opening night to Bayside Blazers on August 15, 2015. This was even after being 18 points up in the 4th Quarter.

On September 6, 2015 the Knights lost to Esplash Brothers 73-58.

Knights, who are in the Eastern Division of the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League, are now ranked third behind the unbeaten Esplash Brothers and New Heights.

The firing of Mr Turnbull was confirmed by a senior member of the team who wished for their name not to be used.

Efforts to reach the former Head Coach for a comment were not successful.

New Head Coach

Mr Turnbull, who was sacked two weeks ago, will be replaced by male super model and former Knights basketball player Nicolas C. Laurac, according to senior sources inside the Knights camp.

When contacted, Mr Laurac confirmed that he is now the new Head Coach of Knights.

He also said his aim was to motivate the team members to perform to potential.

“It’s just to let them see that they have the potential, the skill, manpower and togetherness to do what we have to do. We didn’t get a good start to the regular season but I think we will do better now as players get to feel out each other and grow in confidence,” Mr Laurac told Virgin Islands News Online.

Knights will play their next game on Saturday September 19, 2015 against Talk Done from 8pm.

It remains unclear what led to Mr Turnbull's termination after taking his Knights squad to the 2014 Championship.

This is the second time a Head Coach has been fired from the Knights Basketball Team in less than three years. The inaugural staging of the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League in 2013 saw the termination of Coach Ashaud D. L. Lewis.

Knights are regarded as one of the top 5 basketball teams in the League with players like Jevon K. Serrant aka Twin, former college player Houston E. Penn and three points specialist Charles C. Nichols. This year their Draft pick-up is Eustace 'Boss' Freeman.

Games continue

Meanwhile, games in the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League, which continue this evening September 18, 2015, are expected to be filled with much excitement, keen competition, and overwhelming support from fans and teams.
